Yesterday we brought you the rumours, and today the rumours have been confirmed: Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are indeed divorcing. Shocking fans and the entertainment world alike, they released a joint statement published to their respective Instagram accounts, confirming the split while at the same time keeping the reasons to themselves.

The statement read: “After four wonderful years of marriage we have decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes and privacy for us and our children.”

TMZ is reporting that Joe filed the divorce papers in a Miami court yesterday, asking for sole custody of their two children although he makes the concession that he wants to enact a “parenting plan” between him and Sophie. The outlet reports that the pair have a pre-nuptial agreement in place.

People is reporting that in the court docs, Joe listed the reason for filing as "the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken."

The couple married in 2020 after meeting via Instagram DM.

Of late, Joe has been spotted without his wedding ring, leading to speculation, and the court docs reveal that they’ve been living apart for some time. Joe has retained attorney Tom Sasser, who handled Tiger Wood’s divorce.

While no official reason for their split is given, the tabloids do love to speculate: most notably TMZ and The Daily Mail, who have a history of publishing sexist and misogynistically-tinged articles that seek to shame women. For example, TMZ is citing the reasons for the split from a source, who says, “She likes to party, he likes to stay at home. They have very different lifestyles."

Hmmm. Interesting. Considering in 2020 she told Conan O’Brien, "I'm an introvert, I'm a homebody," she said at the time. "If I could stay at home all day I would, so this is great for me. I leave my house like once a day anyway to walk my dogs and then that's it."

She then added: "Joe and I, everything seems to be working out in my favor here because Joe is a real social butterfly and I struggle to lock him down and just spend time with me. It's like a prison for him, but it's great for me."

The narrative that Sophie is somehow an unfit mother more interested in the nightlife than her family is echoed in The Daily Mail, who published today that Sophie, who is back in her native UK to film the ITV show “Joan,” has been spotted apparently downing shots at the bar.

This narrative is not sitting well with social media and fans, who have pointed out the double standard in the reporting, and labeling it the sexist junk it is. Some are also taking at the famous Jonas Brother for using this “unfit mother” narrative and for splitting with his wife because he can’t control her behaviour.

Despite all the speculation, what we do know is Sophie has been open and honest about her mental health and how she wants to move back to the UK with her children. No matter the reason, be sure to question the “sources” and narratives being spun in the media concerning this split.
