Model and actress Julia Fox has been having a banner 2022. She started it off by gaining international fame as the girlfriend of the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, ‘Ye, and even though that relationship didn’t stand the test of time, it did launch her into the headlines several times a week.

Sometimes it’s for fun and frivolous things, like when she broke the internet with her yassified pronunciation of Uncut Gems as “Uncut Jaaaahhhhms,” or when she told Variety on the Oscars after-party red carpet that her memoir manuscript in progress is “a masterpiece.” Because of course it is.

But this past week, her name has come up a lot for giving her two cents on some serious topics, and it has fans divided.

Her first eyebrow-raising comment came in the wake of the baby formula shortage in North America, which has had a devastating effect on new moms. When Hollywood legend Bette Midler took a rather glib approach to the shortage, by tweeting a condescending and over-generalized note to moms suggesting they, “try breastfeeding,” many, including the Uncut Gems muse, pushed back.

“Actually bette, a lot of women can’t produce breastmilk,” she responded on Instagram, echoing many other moms and non-moms alike who pointed out that many women either face physical challenges to breastfeeding (like not producing milk for days or weeks after giving birth), or simply lack the ability to breastfeed at all. Julia's comment left some fans shocked to be agreeing with her.

Her quiet and informative comment in support of struggling moms was quickly overshadowed when Fox weighed in on the messy and seemingly-never ending defamation trial between exes Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

In another Instagram comment that has been screencapped and widely shared across the internet, Fox seems to suggest that Amber Heard cannot be considered the definition of an abuser because of the age gap and power dynamic between her and her ex-husband Johnny Depp.

“Wrong. She never had the power in the relationship to be abusive to him," she apparently commented on Saturday. “Did she hit him? Yes. Was it abuse? No. You need to have power to be able to abuse it. She was 25. He clearly was always way more powerful including physically and financially."

The comment has made quite the splash, with some notable personalities either strongly agreeing or vehemently disagreeing with Fox.

Singer Aubrey O’Day called it a “trash take” on Twitter, adding, “Plenty of broke, short, skinny, non-famous people have abused their partner. Abuse is simply cruel and violent treatment of a person.. power not being a necessary factor. Less powerful ppl abuse their more powerful partner out of jealousy all the time.

Famed tech journalist and cultural critic Taylor Lorenz, however, sided with Fox, writing, “Abuse is about power and [Heard] didn’t have the power. I don’t think a lot of ppl don’t understand what abusive relationships actually look like. Julia Fox put it well tbh.”

While some fans have  shown support for Fox and Heard by tweeting, “fighting back against your abuser isn’t abuse,” some Depp stans have retorted with, “Julia Fox’s 5 minutes of fame are over so she had to make her name by making a dumb comment about Johnny Depp. Please internet, stop making buffoons famous.”

This isn’t the first time Fox has weighed in on the bitter fight between Depp and Heard. On May 6, her Instagram comment in support of Heard and lambasting Depp was shared by gossip account TrashCulturale, where she said, “So in love with [Heard] and this is clearly a sick way of still controlling her life by suing her all over the world.”
