Get ready to have the
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song stuck in your head all weekend long because HBO Max and Will Smith just dropped the first official trailer for the show’s 30
th anniversary reunion special. And yes, they also revealed the release date.As it turns out fans only have to wait until November 19 (streaming on
Crave in Canada) to see Smith, Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton) Tatyana Ali (Ashley), Karyn Parsons (Hilary), Joseph Marcell (Geoffrey), Daphne Maxwell Reid (Aunt Viv) and of course, DJ Jazzy Jeff return to that iconic living room set to discuss everything
Fresh Prince.“These are the people who made me the man I am today,” Smith wrote on Instagram along with the two-minute trailer. “And I couldn’t let this day go by without marking the occasion. @freshprince reunion... Nov 19 on @HBOMax.”
The trailer is full of goodies for fans, including some of the show’s iconic music and clips of memorable scenes, as well as straight-up revelations that maybe you’ve never heard before. Like the fact that Smith had to ask DJ Jazzy Jeff about 10 times before he finally agreed to appear on the series. (“Will is very good at talking me into things,” he reveals.) Or that Maxwell Reid’s first reaction to being offered an audition for “this new show starring a rapper” was a hard “pass.”“Nobody ever asked me if I could act,” Smith says at one point in the
fresh new take. “And you couldn’t!” Ribeiro ribs back at him as the whole cast shares a chuckle. Later Smith digs a little deeper into the idea when he recalls a moment with his late co-star James Avery, revealing that he just wanted to impress him.“James is the heart of the show,” Ali says in one of the confessionals while perched in a very on-theme throne chair. “James was this… six-foot-four, Shakespearean beast. And I wanted him to think I was good,” adds Smith while clips of Avery as Uncle Phil play. “I fall into his arms at the end of [one] scene and he’s holding me and the shot pans off and he whispered into my ear, ‘Now that’s acting.’” Cue teary eyes everywhere.[video_embed id='2035399']RELATED: You can now rent part of 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' mansion on Airbnb [/video_embed]In the surprisingly revealing trailer the cast also recalls what it was like on tape night, when they would all bust out a musical instrument and get the live audience riled up, and how they didn’t know at the time just how much the series would represent to so many. “Our show meant Black excellence to people,” says Ali. “The excellence is the way that we loved each other.”Of course as fans will probably recall, it wasn’t all love between the fam once those cameras clicked off and the audience went home. At least not when it came to Smith and the actor who originally played Aunt Viv, Janet Hubert. As
previously announced Hubert is indeed a part of the special, but judging by the trailer Smith’s co-stars had no idea that she would be participating.“I couldn’t celebrate 30 years of
Fresh Prince without Janet,” Smith says as the cameras pan to Hubert walking onto a stage and then switching back to everyone’s shocked gasps and open mouths at the news. The trailer then goes dark, leaving everyone in total suspense. Now that’s how you celebrate family drama just in time for the U.S. Thanksgiving.During its original run,
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air lasted six seasons and 148 episodes, and gave the world a theme song that almost anyone who grew up in the 1990s can still rap today. Meanwhile the reunion is perfectly timed to the recent announcement that Peacock (the U.S. streaming service, which is not available in Canada) has picked up a two-season commitment of the
dramatic Fresh Prince reimagining, with Smith on board to produce.Watch the
