Since you're likely still trying to figure out which pop culture meme to choose as your Halloween costume, or deciding if you'd rather go the classic ghost route, we can ease your mind a little with this list of what you should be streaming. Consider it one less decision to make.Leavenworth (STARZ)Following in the thematic footsteps of critically-acclaimed documentary series Wrong Man, director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Twelve , Magic Mike) debuts his documentary series, Leavenworth this weekend, where he served as an executive producer. Focusing on the Clint Lorance military murder case, which sparked national debate after a big New York Times story, Leavenworth reopens the debate, taking us back to 2012 when former U.S. Military Lieutenant Lorance ordered open fire on three Afghanistan civilians, killing two of them. With firsthand accounts from members of Lorance’s platoon, the docu-series follows Lorance's legal battles as he seeks to have his murder conviction overturned. The series not only examines Lorance's case but the military legal system as a whole, exploring policies and moral questions that may have led to the incident. If you’re a fan of true crime docs, this one is for you.
WatchmenWatchmen is possibly the most anticipated series of 2019 and with good reason: it’s HBO's first dip into the superhero genre, it's headed by Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of Lost, and after 10 years, it is another attempt at Alan Moore and David Gibson's cult classic comic book series. Any combination of even two of these things would be enough to get most comic book fans shaking with excitement and ahead of its debut on October 20th, critics have already weighed in excitedly, giving it a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Don Johnson, the series is set in an alternate 2019 America where masked heroes are outlawed, class anxieties are high and racial tensions are even higher. Building on the spirit of the original comic series, Lindelof's Watchmen promises to offer more social and political commentary than a traditional superhero series.[video_embed id='-1']Regina King shares why she's turned down offers for big roles[/video_embed]The Red LineTry watching the trailer for The Red Line without feeling your chest tighten. The limited drama series about the wrongful shooting of a black doctor at the hands of a racist white cop, focuses less on the violence of the act and instead explores the aftermath of the tragedy from the perspective of the families involved. The series features breakout star Aliyah Royale, who's also starring in the upcoming Walking Dead spin-off, TV vet Noah Wyle and Shameless actor Noel Fisher. All eight episodes are available to stream now.
Hidden Gem: FirecrackersThe Canadian Screen Award-winning film is set in an unnamed small rural Ontario town and tells the story of Lou (Michaela Kurimsky) and Chantal (Karena Evans, who at 23 has already made a name for herself as a frequent director of Drake music videos), best friends and high school seniors with dreams of leaving it all behind for New York. After scrubbing toilets for a year, the pair finally save enough to move and start a new life in the big city, until a series of events threatens their dreams, friendship and livelihood. Premiering at TIFF in 2018, director Jasmin Mozaffari received high praise for her first film, nominated for Best First Feature at the Canadian Screen Awards and Best Director for the emotionally raw flick.
