The Good Lord Bird

Pinning down showtime’s new historical drama series, The Good Lord Bird down, is like asking about an elephant being examined by a group of blind men. One half historical drama, one half dark comedy, The Good Lord Bird stars Ethan Hawke as American “radical” and abolitionist John Brown, told through the eyes of a fictional enslaved boy named “Onion” played by Joshua Caleb Johnson.The series is based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Black author James McBride and has been described as a “very funny book on a very serious topic.” The series is a faithful retelling of McBride’s depiction of American slavery, the legacy of John Brown, both good and bad, and the 1800s.
