This week’s list of recommendations features the third season of Lena Waithe’s unapologetic coming-of-age drama, a re-imagining of one of the most iconic fictional characters to leap from page to small screen and an inspirational drama. The ChiChicago native, artist and all-around polarizing figure Kanye West once said, “No you’re not perfect but you’re not your mistakes,” and for better or for worse Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe is determined to show viewers just how true that statement is when it comes to the residents of southern Chicago in season three of her Showtime drama, The Chi. Following the interweaving lives of various people living in a tough and disenfranchised neighbourhood, The Chi is a stark coming-of -age story where the lines between right and wrong are often blurred. The series stars Moonlight’s Alex R. Hibbert, CSI’s Ntare Mwine, Tiffany Boone and Jacob Latimore alongside a cast of Chicago natives adding authenticity and nuance to the characters and settings in a series that will keep you coming back every week. You can catch the season three premiere of The Chi now on Crave (two days early!), with new episodes dropping every Sunday.
Perry MasonIf you like legal dramas and insidious mysteries set in the '30s, then be sure to check out HBO’s newest crime drama, Perry Mason. Based on the novels and short stories about a criminal defence lawyer who takes on clients mostly falsely charged with murder, the latest version of Perry Mason is a dark and gritty re-imagining of the legendary fictional character for a new generation. Down on his luck the series begins, Mason, played by Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, is treated to a new and twisty case knocking on his door as he takes on the trial of a lifetime. Canadian treasure Tatiana Maslany co-stars and John Lithgow and Shea Whigham also appear.  You can catch the premiere of Perry Mason on June 21 with new episodes dropping every Sunday at 9pm ET.
Hidden Gem: I Still BelieveIt’s safe to say we can all use a wholesome romance with a side of melodrama right now and luckily Riverdale’s KJ Apa is here to deliver just that, as the star of the romantic drama I Still Believe. Based on the true story of Christian singer-songwriter Jeremy Camp, the film follows his journey of love and loss when his wife is diagnosed with ovarian cancer shortly before they're married. If that isn't enough to pull you in, the movie also stars the legendary Shania Twain and A Dog’s Journey’s Britt Robinson. You can stream I Still Believe on Crave today.
