This week’s list of recommendations features season two of everybody’s favourite body positive comedy, HBO’s modern take on the Pope and a documentary produced by the late Kobe Bryant.ShrillSaturday Night Live alumni Aidy Bryant is all about female empowerment and body positivity as Annie Easton on the hit comedy series, Shrill. Based on the memoirs of the same name by New York Times writer and columnist Lindy West, the series follows Annie, a self-proclaimed woman “looking to change her life but not her body,” as she balances toxic relationships, sick parents and her body image, all while trying to make it as a journalist. Alongside Bryant is fellow comedians Lolly Adefope and Luka Jones and the series is executive produced by industry heavyweights Lorne Michaels and Elizabeth Banks. The New PopeHBO and Academy Award-winning director Paolo Sorrentino returns for their second original series set in the Vatican, The New Pope. Like its predecessor The Young Pope, the series is an intriguing look inside the papacy starring Jude Law as the fictional Pope Pius XIII, an American-born Pope who attempts to lead the church in a divisive, conservative direction and amasses as many detractors as followers. John Malkovich joins the cast for the new season as the titular new pope John Paul III following the dramatic fallout of the first series that saw Law's Lenny Belardo collapse and his future uncertain. In the doc, Bryant intimately explores his life and career and offers personal commentary on everything from his iconic competitive drive, his brief rap career, meeting his wife Vanessa Bryant, fatherhood and his nearly career ending Achilles injury. Described as therapy on film by Bryant himself, the film is both gripping and inspiring as the world continues to grieve the loss of of the basketball giant, his daughter Gianna Bryant and the other lives sadly lost on the January 26.
