Awards season officially kicks off this weekend with the 2020 Golden Globes (airing January 5 on CTV) and this week's list of recommended viewing is award-worthy, literally. The three series below are up for various Globes and are the prefect way to prep for Hollywood's big party. Enjoy!Catherine the GreatForget Elizabeth II—Helen Mirren’s take on the 18th century Russian Empress, Catherine the Great, might be her most badass role to date. Only loosely based on the historical end of her reign, the series mainly focuses on the Game of Thrones-esque political games the Empress faced as many challenged her power. Jason Clarke (Pet Sematary), Rory Kinnear (Years and Years) and Gina McKee (Bodyguard) co-star but there's no mistaking that this is Mirren's show, earning her a Globe nom for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series. You can stream every episode of Catherine the Great on Crave.
The ActIf you’re a true crime fan, The Act is a must-watch. It’s a fictionalized retelling of the 2015 murder of Dee Dee Blanchard by her daughter, the infamous Gypsy Rose Blanchard. The story—of the younger Blanchard instructing her online boyfriend, who had multiple personality disorder, to murder her mother in cold blood—is so wild that few details needed to be fictionalized. On top of that, the acting is superb. Both Joey King, who plays Gypsy Rose, and Patricia Arquette as Dee Dee Blanchard, were nominated for Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, respectively. You can catch up on all eight episodes of The Act on STARZ.
The Loudest VoiceThe Loudest Voice was nominated for two Globes (Best Television Limited Series and Best Performance by An Actor In a Limited Series) and Russell Crowe transformation into Roger Ailes, the former Chairman and CEO of Fox News, will make your skin crawl. The series explains the origin and rise of the conservative news channel and the life—and fall from grace—of its founder. Each episode details a specific year at Fox News, covering everything from the launch of the station, 9/11, both the 2008 and 2016 U.S. presidential elections, with Ailes' alleged sexual harassment woven throughout the events.  The series also stars Seth MacFarlane, Sienna Miller and Naomi Watts in key roles. You can stream all seven episodes of The Loudest Voice on Crave.
