It was headline news last week that a certain $98 CAD candle from Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand, goop, had sold out. If you don’t know why a candle would cause such a disturbance in the force, we must ask: have you been living under a jade egg or something? Because this candle in particular is designed to smell like Gwyneth’s lady-bits. We kid you not. It is even called, “This smells like my vagina.” We’ll give you a minute to let that sink in.Of course, it is no coincidence that this hoo-ha candle was lit a flame and burned across the interwebs like wild fire. Everybody wanted to know why Gwyneth would be so inclined to share this scent (which is described on goop’s website as “a funny, gorgeous, sexy, and beautifully unexpected scent ... to put us in mind of fantasy, seduction, and a sophisticated warmth,” because of course it is) with the world rather than save it for herself or handsome hubby Brad Falchuk. It must be said that its release also coincides with the Netflix premiere of The Goop Lab, a 6-part docuseries about her lifestyle brand. The woman knows how to market, but still—Gwyneth—we have questions.
“So, it sort of started as a joke,” she explained Wednesday night to a giggling Late Night with Seth Meyers audience, “I was with 'the nose,' Douglas Little, from the brand Heretic and we were kind of messing around and I smelled this beautiful thing and I was like, ‘This smells like my vagina.'" She joked briefly that she was on magic mushrooms when she made the discovery, calling back to an episode of The Goop Lab where a group of goop staffers got high for "science." She then clarified she was actually totally sober. Okay.“But then it became a funny thing where A) it was really funny to us and also a little bit punk rock," she continued. "Women, a lot of us, have grown up feeling certain degrees of shame with our bodies so this was a bit of a subversive candle.”She’s not wrong there, it is 100% Sid-and-Nancy punk rock (plus a kind of a boss troll move!) and also, women are constantly told through subliminal marketing that female genitalia need to be hidden away rather than celebrated. Really, it's not the oddest thing to come out of goop. But it seems some other celebs were much harder sells.[video_embed id='1878977']RELATED: Celebrity cruises are the new vacation fad[/video_embed]Martha Stewart, the queen of lifestyle brands, said, “I wouldn’t buy that candle.” Oh Snap. She went on to say she didn’t think it was goop’s intended audience who sold it out but rather, “a lot of guys who are horny.”Dwayne The Rock Johnson also got in on the light-hearted ribbing, commenting on Instagram, “I tried to make those candles but I kept burning my b*lls.” Womp womp! When a screenshot of his comment was reposted, Gwyneth herself apparently adored it so much, she commented, “This is f***ing priceless #deceased.” Girl, if you’re dead, we have just the candle that's sure to revive you![video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Being fenced in won’t stop this pup from playing fetch with strangers[/video_embed]
