The Battle Round continued on Tuesday’s episode of
The Voice (Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2) and there are still a few Saves and Steals to go around. This season boasts some of the most eclectic teams in the show’s history, which has resulted in head-scratching pairings that in some cases work and in others? Well, we applaud the effort.Coaches Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and John Legend continued to curse their past selves for their pairing choices whenever it came time to pick a winner. Thankfully, Tuesday’s episode saw the coaches use one Save and one Steal. Being sent home is never easy, especially when you’re forced to quarantine in sadness for 14 days.Tuesday’s episode also included host Carson Daly’s announcement that Usher would be returning as this season’s mega-mentor. Usha-baby? We say "Yeah."
DESZ V. JOSEPH SOUL – TEAM KELLY
Joseph Soul (good stage name) got a chair turn from Kelly and Blake during the Blind Auditions, which is impressive. At least, it’s impressive until you go up against four-chair turn, Whitney-Houston-singing Desz. The pair performed the classic “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and Blake said the power of Desz’s voice fills the room. John called Desz a force to be reckoned with and also complimented Joseph on his soulful voice, which he described as having a floating quality. Gwen called Desz’s voice powerful and effortless but added that Joseph was also a worthy competitor. Coach Kelly said Joseph’s voice sounded like an angel who sings R&B, which feels like an accurate description. Calling Desz a "warrior vocalist," Kelly’s decision to pick Desz didn’t come as a huge surprise, especially considering Joseph’s nerves, which caused a few pitch issues early in the performance. What was surprising was how well Joseph performed in light of going against one of this season’s best singers while standing on a massive stage in front of four superstars. It’s a lot. Thankfully, Gwen took notice and stole Joseph. “I was not planning this at all, but your voice is so beautiful and I feel like I can help you with those nerves,” said Gwen. Like we said, a two-chair turn is nothing to sniff at.Winner: DeszSteal: Joseph to Team Gwen
JIM RANGER V. JOHN SULLIVAN
Blake followed in his fiancée’s footsteps after Gwen chose a Julia Michaels song for her team to perform in front of Julia Michaels on Monday’s episode. On Tuesday, Blake picked Kane Brown’s “Good As You” for Jim Ranger and John Sullivan to sing in front of Kane Brown. “I don’t know if having the guy who wrote the song helps or makes it weird,” said Blake. The pair’s performance started with a folk-reggae vibe from John before rocker Jim came in and was finally able to belt out the final few lines, showcasing enough power to get Kelly out of her chair. John said Jim’s voice had soul and grit to it and felt like he used his experience as a pastor to perform to the room. Gwen noted that Jim ramped up throughout the performance and Kelly also felt like Jim finished strong (makes sense considering they brought the talk show host to her feet). Blake said that after hearing and seeing the men perform together, he regretted pairing them and not choosing a different song for John. Unfortunately for John, “Good As You” was not a good fit.Winner: Jim

JULIA COOPER V. JOHN HOLIDAY – TEAM LEGEND
Julia Cooper and John Holiday were two of the stand outs from the Blind Auditions, so it makes sense to pair the powerhouses together. On the other hand, what are you doing, John Legend? As if choosing between the two artists wasn’t difficult enough, John gave the very, very different artists the technical challenge of performing Stevie Wonder’s “Summer Soft.” We typically wouldn’t question an EGOT winner, but… what are you doing, John Legend? “That was so amazing and entertaining and weird in the best way ever,” said Gwen in a very accurate synopsis. The coaches were in awe of John Holiday, who better get tenure at his University after that performance. Coach John saved Julia, who would have easily won against most other artists this season, but that means she still has to battle in the four-way knock-out instead of waiting patiently for the Knockouts.Winner: JohnSaved: Julia
