Tuesday’s finale of The Voice was the final installment in a season full of unchartered territory. Remember a few months ago when the biggest change-up to the singing show was new host Nick Jonas? Simpler times. Amazingly, The Voice continued to produce entertaining and captivating content while the crew, coaches, contestants and host Carson Daly practiced physical distancing, culminating in a finale that crowned Todd Tilghman as this season’s winner and earned coach Blake Shelton his seventh win.Team Kelly’s Micah Iverson placed fifth, while Team Legend’s CammWess earned a fourth place finish. Team Blake’s Toneisha Harris and Team Nick’s Thunderstorm Artis rounded out the top three for the talent-packed Season 18.

The win for the pastor and father of eight was the climax of Tuesday’s episode, but the focus continually shifted back to the current global landscape. Carson Daly was the omnipresent calming voice throughout the show, using every opportunity to not only salute the incredible crew who made the live shows happen remotely, but also the essential workers that have continued to put their lives on the line to help others during the pandemic. It was difficult to not get choked up watching a room full of masked nurses in Los Angeles standing six feet apart from their colleagues as they sang along to John Legend’s “All of Me,” or hearing Kelly Clarkson sing “I Dare You” in six languages.[video_embed id='1961293']RELATED: Meet Faouzia, the Canadian singer Kelly Clarkson wanted for a special collab[/video_embed]Watching the contestants await their fate at home with friends and family, instead of standing on a giant stage under bright lights, made the show feel more personal and relatable. When The Voice returns, it will hopefully be back in studio, but there will be aspects from the remote episodes that viewers will surely miss, including guest appearances by spouses and kids.Tuesday’s show opened with a performance of “Let Me Love Open The Door” by the Top 20 contestants and the coaches, as well as former coaches and mentors CeeLo Green, Shakira and Bebe Rexha. Lady Antebellum and Bon Jovi also performed on Tuesday night and Nick Jonas sang a new solo single, “Until We Meet Again” in addition to airing the JoBros quarantine-filmed music video “X” featuring Karol G. The top five also got their chance to sing with their coaches, albeit remotely. In 2020, it still counts.

TODD TILGHMAN – TEAM BLAKE

Todd got to bring his Pentecostal hop back one last time to perform “The Authority Song” with his coach, Blake Shelton. The song was a perfect match for the pair and was a high energy, rock and roll good time that marked a consistent and impressive run for Tilghman. Now if we can only figure out how someone with eight kids has that much energy. Does he meditate? Did he cut sugar out of his diet? Does he only eat sugar? We’re dying to know.

THUNDERSTORM ARTIS – TEAM NICK

Thunderstorm and Nick performed Phil Collin’s “You’ll Be In My Heart” for their highly anticipated duet. As in, the song from the soundtrack for Disney’s Tarzan. It was pretty, but of all the songs these two men in their mid-20s with huge ranges could choose to perform, they went with this one? Huh.

CAMMWESS – TEAM LEGEND

We finally got to hear just how similar CammWess and his coach John Legend sound and no surprise, their duet was one of the best performances of the evening. Legend stepped away from the piano to perform “Rocket Man” with Camm, or at least he stepped away for the video. LBR, it’s probably John playing on the track. Keeping their jacket game strong all the way into the finale, John and CammWess delivered an emotionally rich and layered performance of a song that fit their voices and made sense.

TONEISHA HARRIS – TEAM BLAKE

It was an emotionally heavy night of paying tribute to frontline workers and keeping the focus on the ongoing global pandemic, but Toneisha and Blake’s performance of “Don’t Stop” provided a brief respite to give viewers hope for a brighter tomorrow. The pair’s combination of big vocals and even bigger energy levels combined for a duet that was pure joy, providing the fullest, most studio-like performance of the night.

MICAH IVERSON – TEAM KELLY

Micah and Kelly’s duet of Lady Antebellum’s “Run To You” was perfect not only because it was a song written for a male and female vocalist, but also because it fit comfortably into Micah’s range. Giving the young singer a final chance to show off his rich tone, Micah got to deliver an impressive cover with the Queen of Covers, who can legit sing anything.
