And the original songs were pretty fantastic, too.

Monday’s episode of The Voice (Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2) gave the five finalists their last shot at proving why they deserve to take home the W during part one of the finale. Each new episode filmed from home features even more camera angles, special effects and filters than the week before, so it’s probably good news that Tuesday is the finale because the elaborate postproduction would start to make for supersized episodes. The latest episode included two performances from each contestant, including one cover and one original song. As if filming from home wasn’t already a major first for Season 18, the show also waded into uncharted territory by inviting Songland songwriters onto The Voice to help write original songs and getting clearance for not one, but two artists who have yet to appear on The Voice. All this and no one even had to get off the couch.

CAMMWESS – TEAM LEGEND

John Legend had to vouch for CammWess to Prince’s estate in order to get the rights to “Purple Rain,” putting his EGOT name on the line and securing the first Prince cover on The Voice. CammWess kept Legend’s name intact, but even better was his performance of his original track “Tomorrow.” Working with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder (Adele, Beyoncé), CammWess crafted a breezy R&B love song that could step right out of a John Legend album and onto Top-40 radio.

TODD TILGHMAN – TEAM BLAKE

Todd Tilghman’s original song “Long Way Home” was a bridge between the Christian and secular music he’s performed all season, creating a happy medium that will likely please all fans. Uplifting and light, the track was written by a former Voice contestant and fine tuned by Songland writers Ester Dean (Rihanna, Katy Perry) and Shane McAnally (Kacey Musgraves, Kelly Clarkson) for a more personal touch. The song didn’t include the soaring notes that Todd often throws in his performances, but it was an easy listen that would have no trouble becoming a must-listen track.

TONEISHA HARRIS – TEAM BLAKE

As Carson said, it’s impossible to look at the coaches at the end of any of Toneisha’s performances and know which team she calls home. Toneisha kept the arena ballads coming on Monday with Journey’s “Faithfully” and her original song “My Superhero,” written for her son. Coach Blake dropped a proud dad comment following Toneisha’s second performance, saying “We’re supposed to be social distancing and she literally just touched millions of people.” Ugh, Blaaaake! But also, yeah. She’s amazing.

THUNDERSTORM ARTIS – TEAM NICK

Thunderstorm got a little help from Ryan Tedder for his original song “Sedona,” and we mean a little. The typically heavy-handed producer kept things simple for Thunderstorm’s soft ballad, which took inspiration from Hawaii and Arizona. Aw, travel. We miss you. Thunderstorm’s big moment came later in the night when he closed out the show with “What A Wonderful World,” which had more levels and opportunities for Thunderstorm to show off his impressive range. Also, sweet backyard.

MICAH IVERSON – TEAM KELLY

Micah had the special effects going into overdrive with his performances on Monday night (a shuttle launch?!). Working with Shawn McAnally on the original song “Butterfly,” an easy addition to any hit radio lineup, Micah stayed in the pop lane for his cover and performed Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars.” Coach Kelly Clarkson revealed that this was the first time the band had cleared the song for The Voice. It’s been almost a decade since Snow Patrol had their career launched into the stratosphere thanks to Grey’s Anatomy, so maybe the band thought would be a rebirth for the song. Nope, still picturing Denny’s brutal death. But great job, Micah!
