Fans everywhere were thanking the TV gods that the entire season of
The Masked Singer (Wednesdays, 8 pET, CTV) was actually prerecorded, so while most of Hollywood is shutting down to practice safe social distancing, everyone at home got to hunker down and enjoy a new episode of the celebrity guessing game on Wednesday night. (And with only one awkward reference from host Nick Cannon to March Madness, which of course, has been cancelled.) Regardless,
what an episode. Following up on
last week’s elimination of the Bear (aka Sarah freaking Palin) the show threw everyone into the pond when it unmasked the Swan.
Swan + Ken = heart emojis
Why was Swan in the bottom of the pack? Hard to say. Her energetic performance of “I Hate Myself for Loving You” had the crowd on their feet and laughing, and it even featured rolling photos of panelist Ken Jeong in the background. “I love you Ken Jeong!” she shouted at the end of the ditty, which totally make Ken blush. While Ken (and the other panelists) was totally there for it, fans were probably just relieved that Nicole Scherzinger wasn’t crushing on yet another mask with no follow up (where’s that date we were promised, Nicole and Victor Oladipo? Where is that date?!). But hey, there’s still time in the season for that.[video_embed id='1501883']RELATED: Ken Jeong showed us his infamous dance moves and it was the best[/video_embed]Truthfully, the Ken and Swan thing was less romantic and more comedic. It all boiled down to a clue that the pair had worked on together before or knew one another professionally. “Are you my wife?” Ken laughed through his awkwardness before wondering if it could be Kristen Bell or Olivia Munn. Meanwhile the other panelists were all over the place, from Kristen Stewart and Mila Kunis to Nina Dobrev and Meghan Fox. In other words? The panelists knew that whoever was under that costume was a big deal and a very recognizable face, because this season has been ridiculous in terms of the star factor.
What no one was banking on though, was that the person underneath would be
Bella Thorne, aka Disney star, model, and all-around social media maven. She and Ken had starred in
The Duff together, and she ribbed him for not guessing her identity. (To be fair, when has Ken ever correctly identified any of his co-stars?) And so the
Masked Singer shocks continue...
The return of Joel McHale
One thing that wasn’t so shocking? The return of Joel McHale as a guest panelist. The
Community star must really love hanging around
The Masked Singer production stages because he’s been on each season now to continue his (fake) beef with Ken Jeong. The two of them “brawled,” hugged it out, and danced more times than you could keep track of, which only added to the entertainment and had fans clamouring on social media for the powers that be to make McHale a full-time addition to the panel. (Not gonna happen, according to
the showrunner.) Cue disappointed groans everywhere.
McHale and the others helped guide viewers through guessing the identities of Astronaut, T-Rex, Rhino and Night Angel. Right now the guesses as to the remaining Group C contestants are all over the place, which is about standard for the show at this point. As the series progresses, the clues are getting harder and harder, and the contestants themselves are doing everything from putting on fake accents to invoking entire personalities that will endear them to the crowd. Sometimes it works (still looking at you, White Tiger) and sometimes it doesn’t (it was a good run, Swan). But that’s the fun of this show. And that fun continues next week with the final performances by Group C. Whoever lands in the top three will join previous Super Nine finalists like Frog, Kitty and Kangaroo (remember them?) in a supersized April Fool’s day episode. Robin Thicke is undoubtedly planning his puns now.
