It was Group C’s time to shine once again this week on a brand new episode of The Masked Singer (Wednesdays, 8 pET on CTV), as the Mushroom, Broccoli, Squiggly Monster and Jellyfish took to the stage with their second round of ditties. There, they impressed the panelists with their colourful performances, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough for one notable sitcom dad, who was sent packing.

A familiar return

Given how all-consuming this week has been with the U.S. election, it was probably a nice change of pace for fans to tune into a silly singing show instead of more news reports doling out red and blue statistics. The Masked Singer didn’t disappoint, as host Nick Cannon kicked the night off by revealing a special guest star panelist: Mr. TV. The masked man took to the stage early in the show to perform Maroon 5’s “Memories,” which should have been a clue in itself. However none of the panelists had the slightest idea who he was, and they were shocked (again) when it wound up being none other than season two winner Wayne Brady, aka The Fox. As it turns out Brady isn’t just an entertaining contestant, but the Let’s Make a Deal host was an excellent panelist, too. He actually agreed with Ken Jeong not once, but twice when it came to the guessing, which was kind of nice considering that sometimes the Ken jokes can feel like a bit of a pile-on (Jenny McCarthy loves him deep down though, right?). He also pulled out some great original guesses to balance the panelists out (Jayden Smith as Mushroom?), proving that maybe there should always be five personalities up on that stage. After all, the more guesses the merrier.[video_embed id='2069974']MORE FROM TV: The cast of 'Truth Seekers' share why the series is a perfect mix of comedy and horror [/video_embed]

Some spellbinding performances

As longtime fans have probably noted, The Masked Singer has taken to incorporating episodic themes in recent seasons, including Wednesday night’s “spellbinding” edition. Basically that meant that after each contestant performed, Nick would rub a lamp and a magical bonus clue would “pop up,” giving the panelists even more to chew on.Not that they weren’t given plenty of fodder in this week’s clue packages, mind you. Mushroom hit it hard with the Mean Girls theme this week before unveilling a strawberry-flavoured jelly brain as a bonus clue. (When Nick actually took a bite of it, Ken couldn’t have been the only one out there gagging, right?) And in more nutritious content, Broccoli included a bunch of mobster insinuations in his clue package before doubling down with a roulette wheel. Is he actually Jason Alexander, as Jenny predicted? Or could Ken’s dreams of Martin Short being on the show finally come true? Everyone will have to wait, because the veggies were once again safe this week. Add in another spectacular performance from Jellyfish, who impressed everyone with her haunting performance of Patsy Cline’s “Crazy,” and that left Squiggly Monster as the last Mask standing.

Oh Mylanta

Look, Squig’s performance of “I Can’t Get No (Satisfaction)” was fine and all, but it just didn’t stand up to the other contestants. That didn’t make the panelists love him any less, especially when they almost all ditched their previous guesses of people like Ted Danson and Al Gore to land on the one and only Bob Saget, AKA Danny Tanner of Full House fame and the narrator behind How I Met Your Mother. (The giant teddy bear lamp clue was totally giving off “Ted” Mosby vibes, right?) Sure enough, it was Saget’s face that emerged from underneath the multiple-eyed Squiggly’s, giving Robin Thicke and Jenny another first-impression win apiece. Meanwhile, the only panelist who didn’t go with Saget as their final guess was Nicole Scherzinger, who for some reason landed on Gary Cole (how rude).“We’re all going through a tough time, [with this show] I get to be a part of your joy,” Saget said when asked why he did the series. And as for why he chose the Squiggly Monster? “They sent me a picture, I said yeah,” he revealed in that dry, Saget-like way. Oh Bob. Cut, it, out.And with that, Group C is down to three, and the overall competition is down to 10. Follow along next week as the remaining Group A contestants—Popcorn, Snow Owls, and Sun—return to the stage for a fight to see which two will move on to the Super Six.Watch The Masked Singer Wednesdays at 8 pET on CTV.[video_embed id='2070262']BEFORE YOU GO: This father had a priceless reaction to holding his first child [/video_embed]
