‘The Masked Singer’ is turning into a dating show and we're here for it

As far as singing competitions go, The Masked Singer (Wednesdays, 8 p.m. ET, CTV) hits all the right notes. Nick Cannon is about as perfect a host as you can get, there are celebrities wearing ridiculous costumes and our pun-loving hearts are with judge Robin Thicke every single time he cracks another dad joke.So we don’t even know what to do with the fact that on Wednesday’s double-header of an episode we also, potentially, got two new couples to ship: Nicole Scherzinger and her husband-to-be Thingamajig, and Nick Cannon and his new “fiancé” The Leopard.

Couples in the making

Seriously, how hilarious was The Leopard’s silent proposal to Nick? Obviously whoever is under that mask is an expert performer and is completely ready to ham it up for the cameras. The judges seem to think it’s Jamie Foxx or Billy Porter, and both guesses are good and all, but we’re still getting major Ru Paul vibes. The words “RU” were even in that clue package. But who the heck ever knows with this show?

Then there’s Thingamajig. The way he sings with that silky voice every time he takes the stage has us swooning from our couches, so we completely understand Nicole’s very public crush. It’s like Blind Date and The Masked Singer had a baby, and its name is Thing A. Majig. We’re all-in and if whoever is under that mask (Wayne Brady?!) is single, he and Nicole will probably begin dating in like 30 seconds. Little green babies may or may not follow.

The confusion is real

Now that the competition is officially cut in half it’s getting harder to sift through those clues, especially because it seems like everyone left is actually a really great singer. If we weren't so curious as to who these people were, we’d kind of like them all to stick around.You’d think that in the second half of the episode things would be easier since the performers also brought in an object from home but how items like an ASL book or a forensics kit are supposed to help identify these singers is beyond us. If anything they just left us—and the judges—even more confused.So it looks as though we’re going to have at least one more week of bugging out over who the Ladybug is, and pounding out our guesses over Dog’s identity. Which, we suppose, is the whole point.

And then there were two…

At least we got to see who two celebrities were this week thanks to the double elimination. In the first hour, Jenny McCarthy finally had some sort of wish fulfillment come true when The Penguin turned out to be Sherri Shepherd, a person she’s guessed like, a dozen times now in the past two seasons. (We have a feeling Sherri agreed to do the show in the first place just because Jenny was so convinced she was one of the performers in season one.)

And then, in what was a hilarious twist that proved the Internet right once and for all, The Black Widow turned out to be Raven-Symoné. That reveal was actually perfect since Robin Thicke once wrote a song for her, and because guest judge Anthony Anderson (who was as confused as the rest of us), wrote her into his show black-ish, as his sister. He even texted her during the performance because well, brother’s intuition we guess. It’s like the powers-that-be know how much we love a good coincidence.We’re sad to see the ladies go, but if we’re being honest we’re also kind of relieved. Guessing the identities of these stars can keep us up a night if we think too hard about it all, so we have to feed our addictions somehow.Now excuse us while we furiously google the remaining contestants until next week.The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.
