Our hearts just grew three sizes today — all due to the news that a two-hour musical rendition of How The Grinch Stole Christmas will be airing December 9, broadcasting across Whoville and beyond. Glee actor Matthew Morrison will star in the production, titled Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical! Morrison shared the announcement on Instagram, giving his followers a look at the backstage goings on as the cast and crew rehearsed the production at London’s Troubadour Theatre.
“In what has been an extremely challenging year for us all,” Morrison said in a statement about the special, “it is an honor to bring some holiday cheer into viewers’ homes this December. My wish is to bring some Who-ville magic to this holiday season and, while the pandemic presents some challenges in bringing a stage production to life, we are excited to present a unique version of this seasonal favourite in a new creative and imaginative way.”Fans will be excited to know that the musical, which spent two seasons on Broadway in 2006 and 2007, will feature the beloved songs ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ and ‘Welcome Christmas’ (make sure your singalong voices are well-lubricated with Hot Toddies come broadcast time).Perhaps most importantly when it comes down to questions of casting, it’s reported that Denis O’Hare (Morrison’s fellow American Horror Story alumnus) will play the story’s best-loved character: the Grinch’s pet-dog-turned-sleigh-pulling-reindeer, Max.
