Glitter, queens, stunning wigs, epic performances — take everything RuPaul is known for, package it neatly in a new series that looks equal parts heartwarming and hilarious, and you’ve got AJ and the Queen.Oh, and add a fearless 10-year old kid named AJ into the mix, too.RuPaul is already a household name, but the Emmy-winning drag superstar (with bone structure most of us can only dream of mimicking after a few hours of heavy contouring), is taking his larger-than-life personality to the small screen in a new format. On Wednesday, fans finally got a glimpse at his latest project — a new scripted Netflix series, which will feature plenty of RuPaul's Drag Race stars… 22, to be exact.Set to premiere on January 10, the first trailer offers us everything our hearts could desire, and maybe even more. While this isn't RuPaul's first scripted role (far from it, actually — most recently, he's guest starred on Grace & Frankie, Broad City, and had a recurring role in Girlboss), this is his first leading TV role outside of Drag Race hosting duties. Taking centre stage, RuPaul plays Ruby Red, a beloved drag queen who has her life savings ($100,000 worth) stolen out from under her by a criminal ex-boyfriend, just as she's about to retire. In her path to redemption (and a restored savings account), Ruby hits the road on a cross-country tour with an unlikely accomplice — a 10 year-old "stowaway" named AJ, according to the official synopsis. If the trailer is any indication, AJ proves to be a feisty match for Ruby, testing her at every turn and quite literally knocking her off her heels by asking the shocking question: “Who is Diana Ross?”
Love, humanity, betrayal, self-discovery, and showbiz seem to be the overall themes — with a good amount of wig glue and eyeliner, too.For Drag Race fans missing the weekly dose of sickening queens during the off-season, there's more good news. Fan favourites Bianca Del Rio, Valentina, Latrice Royale, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Katya, Chad Michaels, Jinkx Monsoon, Jade Jolie, Kennedy Davenport, Trinity The Tuck, and so many more are set to guest star throughout the series, and some even make an appearance in the trailer. Shantay, you stay, AJ! Hilariously, 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Jane Krakowski is also spotted in the trailer, dancing along with RuPaul, with more volume in her hair than we’ve ever seen before.
