Along with her two best friends, Devi is better known for her scholastic endeavors than for being popular at school, but it’s sophomore year and she’s ready to put academics to the side in an effort to have sex with her crush. What. Could. Go. Wrong? The first trailer shows Devi and her crew trying to navigate the complex and confusing intersection of high school and hormones, which in 2020 includes practicing Kegel exercises via Wikipedia. Airing on Netflix, the new show lets Kaling step outside the confines of broadcast to write dialogue that is more in line with the foul-mouth banter that would actually take place among teens. Oh s***, indeed.Never Have I Ever debuts on April 27 and gives teens and older audiences a chance to remember what an actual school looks like. The groundbreaking new series is breathing fresh air into the highly-saturated teen rom com landscape by casting an Indian-Canadian actor as the lead, a first for a project of this size. Ramakrishnan’s best friends are played by Chinese -American actor Ramona Young (Santa Clarita Diet) and model and musician Lee Rodriguez. The new series will explore Devi’s effort to balance her desire to be a typical American teen and her family’s Indian culture, a theme that many viewers will find relatable.[video_embed id='1939142']RELATED: The star of Mindy Kaling's new show reveals how she got the role of a lifetime[/video_embed]Kaling shared the trailer on her Instagram and was immediately flooded with positive messages from her famous friend base, including Reese Witherspoon, Fortune Feimster and Jessica Mulroney. Many of Kaling's followers were also thrilled to see the kind of representation they felt was lacking when they were growing up while others were delighted to seeRamakrishnan’s Devi reading a book from the After series by Anna Todd in the opening scene. (Todd grew a large audience writing on the digital platform Wattpad and took inspiration from former One Direction member Harry Styles.)Kaling has continually pushed for more representation in her projects, creating films and TV series that offer fans the chance to see themselves represented on screen. Kaling wrote and starred opposite Emma Thompson in the 2019 film Late Night, which earned Thompson a Golden Globe nomination and proved that a film with a non-white lead and a leading woman over the age of 60 was bankable. Kaling also created the mini-series Four Weddings And A Funeral in 2019, using the 1994 British film as the jumping off point to her ode to romantic comedies. Straying from the original film and its all-white line-up, Kaling cast Nathalie Emmanuel and Nikesh Patel as the leads and love interests in the series, which may still receive a second season on Hulu.Never Have I Ever debuts on Netflix April 27.[video_embed id='1939218']BEFORE YOU GO: Even Anna Wintour is wearing sweatpants now[/video_embed]
