If you tuned into the virtual Emmy Awards ceremony on September 20, you may have accidentally choked on your popcorn when the trailer for the anticipated new Marvel series WandaVision made its debut. The cryptic, nearly minute-and-a-half trailer re-introduces the reality-warping MCU character Wanda Maximoff, AKA Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), while giving fans another look at Vision (Paul Bettany), an android who first appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Like in the comics on which the characters are based, the pair are married in this six-part miniseries, but everything after that is kind of confusing.
The trailer opens with some black-and-white, sitcom-like shots of the couple dressed in 1950s garb as they entertain dinner guests, before the timeline switches and the couple is thrust through all sorts of eras and people fly through portals. Is it Wanda playing with the timelines and trying to bring back Vision, who actually died in Avengers: Infinity War? That’s the working theory, given that this “mega event series” is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Or perhaps everything is in Wanda’s head? The trailer doesn’t exactly specify. In fact, the trailer answers none of fans’ questions, including Vision’s actual fate. But it does give a shot of Scarlet Witch in her original costume, not to mention a creepy-as-heck scene between Bettany and Katheryn Hahn, whose Agnes character is dressed like a witch. There’s also a quick flash of the couple each holding a baby, which could mean their comic book sons, Thomas and William (AKA Wiccan and Speed), also factor in. Kat Dennings, Randall Park and Teyonah Parris, who were not seen (or barely seen) in the trailer, also star. While many fans remain confused but excited, some eagle-eyed super fans do believe they’ve picked up on one pretty major clue. In the 80-second trailer there is a surprising amount of attention paid to a wine bottle that seems to be pouring itself. If you look closely at the label it reads “Maison du Mepris,” which roughly translated from French means “House of Contempt.” In other words, they believe it’s House of Misery, AKA House of M, which is a storyline from the comics in which Scarlet Witch has a psychotic break and tries to change reality in order bring her lost children back. You can read more about it all here.It may not be much to go on, but between that, the bright colours and the fast-paced action, fans were still pretty excited to get a snippet of the series—which is expected to debut in late 2020. According to the official synopsis from Marvel, WandaVision “blends the style of classic sitcoms with the MCU in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.” The entire project is directed by Matt Shakman (Fargo, Mad Men), and Jac Schaeffer (Black Widow) is the head writer. While fans were hoping for more, the good news is that there are only a few months left to go before the six-part series, which cost a reported $150 million to make, finally debuts. Until then, let’s let all of that mind-bending speculation run rampant, shall we?[video_embed id='2038396']Before you go: Marvel casts Canadian Tatiana Maslany to play She-Hulk[/video_embed]
