It’s not like Dr. Bashir “Bash” Hamed (Hamza Haq) to have any sense of stability, but somehow, that’s how we find him this week—for a moment, at least. ER head Dr. Bishop (John Hannah) made sure his employment at York Memorial is secure and he’s no longer under threat of eviction from this landlord. Don’t get too comfortable though. Just when we think Bash may have found his new normal, a patient presents a novel challenge that throws his zen way out of whack.“I’ve learned to not let what happens here affect me personally,” Vivian Barnes (Grace Lynn Kung) tells Bash off the top of the episode. “But maybe that’s what makes you a good doctor.” That extra level of care will see Bash at odds with his personal beliefs and morals when he successfully resuscitates an elderly woman who is less than impressed with his efforts to save her life.

Do not resuscitate

“You were supposed to let me die,” the old woman says as she opens her eyes, and just like that, we're onto the touchy subject of euthanasia and the right to die. Dr. Bishop assures Bash that should a DNR (do not resuscitate) request conflict with his personal or religious beliefs, he can transfer the patient to another attending, but Bash admits that he is more influenced by his wartime medical work than his Muslim beliefs.“Sometimes I pray five times a day, and sometimes I don’t pray at all,” he admits to Dr. Hunter (Jim Watson), but as he’s haunted by images of little children wearing gas masks, it’s clear Bash is having trouble coping with a patient who wants to die when he comes from a place where people are fighting to live.[video_embed id='1909547']RELATED: ‘Transplant’ star Hamza Haq on how he traded his day job to become a leading man[/video_embed]The patient’s daughter is also having trouble wrapping her head around her mom’s DNR, but Bash, thanks to his intimate experience with death, has some heartfelt advice:  “Take the chance to say goodbye,” he offers. “My parents both died suddenly before I was ready to let them go. This may or may not be the way you want to say goodbye, but this time is a gift, if you choose to see it that way.” Bash’s parents (both doctors) were killed in the Syrian conflict.

Head or heart?

Bash isn’t the only one dealing with a head versus heart battle. Throughout the episode, the other doctors are also confronted with their personal beliefs clashing with rationale. We find out Dr. Leblanc (Laurence Leboeuf) has a heart arrhythmia and uses a pacemaker, but she’s not taking care of herself or even admitting to others that she suffers from it. She’s a workaholic to the max, but doesn’t get how important it is to take care of herself, too.Dr. Curtis (Ayisha Issa) and Bishop are dealing with a more metaphorical heart problems. Dr. Curtis has had an ongoing fling with the smoking-hot security guard at the hospital for some time now, but she’s still refusing to even acknowledge he’s her boyfriend, even in the face of losing him forever.[video_embed id='1914821']RELATED: ‘Transplant’ star Ayisha Issa has superhero ambitions and the moves to back them up[/video_embed]Last week, Bishop asked head ER nurse Claire (Torri Higginson)—with whom he once had a "thing"—to dinner, but she shut him down.  No reigniting that spark, we guess. This week, she’s singing a different tune though, and despite her personal beliefs and all logic, she tells Bishop that he’s on for that date and he better choose the restaurant wisely.  Girl, go get ya man!All our faves at some point had to choose a side—head or heart—and accept the consequences and new path that means for them.  Looks like the stakes are getting higher (and considering this show started with a van crashing into a building, that’s saying a lot).Watch new episodes of Transplant on CTV Wednesdays at 9/10MT.[video_embed id='1927603']BEFORE YOU GO: Ryan Reynolds, Seth Rogen join PM Trudeau’s efforts to flatten the curvee[/video_embed]
