The Knockouts for Season 18 of The Voice (Mondays at 8 pET on CTV2) came to climatic end on Monday night, with coaches Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, John Legend and Nick Jonas securing the final spots in their teams ahead of the Live Shows. Well, almost. We still have to wait for the results of the first ever four-way Knockout. That’s right, things have gotten so dramatic at The Voice that viewers are now being left with cliffhangers.

Mandi Castillo and Thunderstorm Artis – Team Legend

For an EGOT winner, John Legend makes some bad musical decisions. His worst may have been pairing Thunderstorm and Mandi. Admittedly, we went into the performance assuming Thunderstorm was the obvious winner, but Mandi rose to the occasion with a cover of the Ben E. King classic “Stand By Me.” As Nick said, both Mandi and Thunderstorm tell the audience more about themselves with each performance. Kelly and Blake both leaned towards Mandi, who gave more energy in her performance, but Nick was in love with Thunderstorm’s understated brilliance in his cover of John’s “Preach.” Team Legend made the surprising move to go with Mandi, which left Nick open to finally steal a player unopposed. “I may be the luckiest man in the world for pulling this off,” said Nick after John handed him Thunderstorm, a surefire semi-finalist. Finalist. Easily top three.

Cedrice and Toneisha Harris – Team Blake

We’ve seen two artists cover their coaches in this Knockout round, but this is the first time we’ve seen two competitors cover the same artist. Cedrice stuck close to Rihanna’s “Love On The Brain,” while Toneisha effortlessly played with “Diamonds.” While Cedrice’s vocals combined with her stage presence captivated the coaches, it was Toneisha’s stunning range and thoughtful choices of where to go big and where to keep the song quiet and intimate that blew the coaches away. “You make me mad every time you sing, because I know I can never do that,” Nick said of Toneisha’s voice, adding that he’s also mad Toneisha is on Team Blake. You could even call him . . . jealous. Blake stayed with his Day 1 and picked Toneisha, while his newest team member Cedrice, who began her journey on Team Legend, earned Kelly’s only steal. Cedrice is now a Jo Bros away from collecting all four coaches.

Micah Iverson and Tayler Green – Team Kelly

Team Kelly’s Micah Iverson and Tayler Green both did their best to rework their covers on this week’s performance and it paid off. Tayler’s slowed-down rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” was so good that she got Blake out of his seat. John called Tayler ‘mesmerizing’ and said everything about her performance pointed towards her being a star. Kelly applauded Micah for picking a difficult song with Halsey’s “Graveyard” said added that his Battle performance would have put him in the finale. Kelly also noted that Tayler’s performance in the Knockout round was finale-worthy, making the decision impossible for the pair’s coach. Well, almost impossible. Kelly went with Micah, a move that shocked the unfortunately steal-less Nick, who thought Tayler had one of the best performances of the Knockouts.

Four-Way Knockout

For the first time ever, the Knockout round included a saved artist from each team competing for a final spot in the Live Shows. Team Blake’s Todd Michael Hall had some pitch issues with his performance of OneRepublic’s “Somebody To Love,” and may have been better served to go with Queen’s “Somebody To Love.” But still–that range! Team Legend’s Nelson Cade III gave a soulful and sweet rendition of Daniel Caesar’s “Best Part,” but it likely was not enough of a high-energy pick to get viewers to vote. The two artists likely competing for the final spot are Team Nick’s Michael Williams, who gave an emotional and impressive performance of Calum Scott’s “You Are The Reason,” and Team Kelly’s Samantha Howell, who turned Willie Nelson’s “You Were Always On My Mind” into a soaring ballad. The final spot will be decided by viewer votes and will be revealed when the Live Shows are scheduled to begin in two weeks, but NBC has yet to announce the plan amidst the ongoing production shutdowns. We do know that next week’s episode will feature behind-the-scenes clips from this season, so at least we’re not saying goodbye to The Voice just yet.
