The Battle Round continued on Monday’s joyful episode of
The Voice (Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2), which we need now more than ever. As we cling to the final month of pre-taped Battle and Knockout Rounds, the coaches and their mentors are back on screen once again to distract us from the challenges of real life and allow reality TV to act as a calming salve.Once again, Blake Shelton was joined by popstar Bebe Rexha, Kelly Clarkson worked English hitmaker Dua Lipa, John Legend reunited with his “Everything” duet partner Ella Mai, and Nick Jonas gave fans a chance to see the Jonas Bros back in action again.A steal and a save were both used this week to keep two singers around, but as the Battle Round winds down, coaches are running out of their golden tickets.
Darious Lyles vs. Nelson Cade III – Team Legend
We know that we’ve lost track of what day it is (is March ever going to end?) but we’re pretty sure we’re still in the Battle Round and not the finale. It appears that no one told Darious and Nelson, because the men came together (pun!) for a performance that was finale-worthy. Everyone has heard “Come Together” approximately 1,000 times, which made it seem like a tired choice. You know who else is tired? EGOT winner John Legend, who doesn’t want to have to explain his choices to anyone. Our bad. From the coordinated spins, to Nelson’s growl, to Darious’ so-cool-it-hurts opening line, “Come Together” was one of the best performances this season. John thought so too, which is why he chose Darious and the winner and saved Nelson. Don’t doubt John Legend. (That was more of a personal ethos than a command.)
CammWess vs. Mandi Castillo – Team Legend
“Senorita” was a no-brainer song choice for Team Legend’s CammWess and Mandi Castillo and both singers lived up to expectations. Kelly’s crush on Mandi was reignited even though Mandi only sang in English for the majority of the track, but it was her new crush on CammWess that made the biggest difference. After the pair delivered their sexy performance, frontrunner Mandi scored the win for Team Legend, but Kelly surprised everyone, including CammWess, by using her save on the John Legend-inspired singer. Kelly loves John and therefore loves CammWess. Hopefully this makes up for the whole
birthday snafu during the Blind Auditions.
Jacob Daniel Murphy vs. Toneisha Harris – Team Blake
In case it wasn’t obvious, that Lizzo song was Team Blake. As John said, “I just want to recognize Jacob and Toneisha for doing so well despite having Blake as their coach.” Kelly spent the entire performance dancing and declared that Jacob and Toniesha’s battle was one of her favourites. Blake praised Toneisha for her powerhouse vocals and pitch perfect performance but didn’t leave Jacob hanging and applauded him for commanding the stage and making the battle so good. Toneisha was the frontrunner going in and took the win, but all four coaches were impressed with how well one-chair turn Jacob fared against four-chair turn Toneisha.
Gigi Hess vs. Michah Iverson – Team Kelly
Gigi and male Micah, who is holding it down on Team Estrogen, sorry, Clarkson, delivered the best duet of the season. Maybe not the best battle, but the best duet. Most pairings requires the singers to reach and twist their voices to find places where they can harmonize, but Gigi and Micah’s performance felt effortless from start to finish. Kelly made it all the way to Micah and Gigi’s dress rehearsal before she cried this season, which is pretty good. The pair had the coaches split on who won the battle and Kelly eventually picked Micah, but we’re still holding out for these two becoming a duet post-
Voice.
