Monday’s episode of
The Voice (Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2) returned to the homes of coaches Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, John Legend and Nick Jonas as well as the top nine contestants for a night of heartfelt performances. Fan Night gave the contestants the chance to dedicate their performance to a loved one, which in one case included a coach. That’s one way to play it safe. These performances will help decide which of the final nine will move on to next week’s finale, with this season marking the first time
The Voice has done a Top 5 instead of Top 4. There's already been
a lot of firsts this year, so why not?Season 18 mentor James Taylor returned for a second at-home performance on Monday, which also included appearances by and Kane Brown and the
Billboard 100-topping Doja Cat. But the big stars of the night were the contestants, who aren’t just sitting at home hoping to win. Well, they are, but they’re also practicing a lot.[video_embed id='1956777']RELATED: Kelly Clarkson tells us all about her secret talent[/video_embed]
TONEISHA HARRIS – TEAM BLAKE
Ugh, aren’t we all sick of hearing contestants sing Céline Dion on
The Voice? No! Because no one ever even dares utter the diva’s name, let alone take on one of her ballads. That was until Monday night, when Team Blake’s Toneisha Harris made “Because You Love Me” look like child’s play. “She ain’t even on my team, but I’m keeping it real. You couldn’t even tell, because of how we’re doing this show, the power that Toneisha has, the power that that song takes,” said Kelly, who offered Toneisha an open invitation to perform “Because You Love Me” in 2021 at Clarkson’s upcoming Las Vegas residency. “I want people to hear just how big you sound,” said Kelly. “If I ever get to play another show again, you’re welcome to come sing with me too,” added Blake. This is Céline Dion, Blake. Vegas or bust.
CAMMWESS – TEAM LEGEND
CammWess and his honey butter vocals returned for yet another standout performance. Continuing to improve each week and offer exciting and inventive takes on covers, CammWess sang Kacey Musgrave’s “Rainbow” and left his former coach Kelly Clarkson in tears. Admittedly, her once-full wine glass was almost empty by the time CammWess closed out the show, but it was still a cry-worthy cover.
MEGAN DANIELLE – TEAM KELLY
Dark horse Megan Danielle may not win
The Voice, but she’s got a lifelong friend and supporter in coach Kelly Clarkson. Megan’s performance of Rascall Flatts' outrageously sad song “What Hurts The Most” was outrageously sad, but also beautiful. “Every time you sing it’s like hearing a broken heart trying to fly,” said Kelly. Is that a lyric? It should be. “It sounds so beautifully broken and I thank you,” said Clarkson, who credited Megan with reminding her why she loves to sing. And we thank Megan for that.
MICAH IVERSON – TEAM KELLY
Teacher’s pet Micah Iverson dedicated his performance on Monday night to his coach, which TBH is pretty brilliant. You don’t upset any of your family or friends and you’re guaranteed to get a glowing response from your coach. Micah didn’t need the extra credit, though, delivering a deeply personal and vulnerable rendition of beautiful and emo-riffic Death Cab For Cutie’s “I Will Follow You Into The Dark.” Nick complimented Micah on his creative staging and vocal execution, which helped turn a performance at home into one worthy of an award show. Kelly added a “Yes! Yes! Yes!” plus or minus about five exclamation marks. “You are not just a great vocalist, you are an enormously great artist,” she said.
ZAN FISKUMS – TEAM LEGEND
Nick Jonas has tried to sing Camila Cabello’s “Never Be The Same” several times in the car and failed, so that goes to show the level of difficulty of the pop song. Zan took Cabello’s track down a dark, electronic path that gave it a new life and still provided enough room to show off her falsetto and end on a massive belt-out note. John made it clear that Zan is always heavily involved with the arrangement of her songs, which is even more impressive considering EGOT winner John Legend is her coach. We would fully hand the reigns over to Legend, but that goes to show that Zan really is the full package.
