Freestyle Love Supreme. As you might have guessed, he was brilliant and funny and inspiring in all the ways we know him to be.
We’re no strangers to watching Miranda’s
epic freestyling skills on Fallon—heck, Lin even recorded
Jimmy's outgoing voicemail message back in 2015—but it's always a pleasure to watch him craft rhymes with words completely outside our normal working vocabularies. And this time, he was doing it all with his OG crew,

Hamilton (and well before he was giving us
life advice on Twitter and
hanging around with Mary Poppins), Miranda was just a poor substitute teacher working on a pipe dream musical (which would turn into the Tony Award-winning
In The Heights) with a group of friends in the basement of
The Drama Bookshop in New York. It was from those late-night writing sessions that
Freestyle Love Supreme was born.
Miranda explained how he and his friends would distract themselves and de-stress by taking breaks to rap about their day. And as it turns out, they were pretty darn good at it (duhhh). So they decided to bring the show out of the basement and in front of a real audience (yay!).But no Broadway production is without at least one harrowing performance—otherwise, what funny story would you tell during your Late Night press tour? The crew's first ever show in front of an audience was during the infamous power outage of 2003 (you remember). The theatre had no power so Miranda and his cast walked 11 blocks—with their 16-person audience—to The Drama Bookshop basement where the power had already been restored. When they got there, they handed each one of the audience members a beer ("like broke Oprahs") and went on with the show.Fast forward about 15 years later, and here we are.
