The final competitors in Group B were cut in half with a tense, double-elimination episode of The Masked Singer (Wednesdays, 8 p.m. ET on CTV) this week, but that wasn’t the most shocking twist of the episode. The biggest surprise was that Ken Jeong actually correctly identified the first eliminated celebrity of the night, and then he was so overcome with emotion during the second unveiling that he broke down in tears.

The Final Four Take the Stage

To back up a bit, Crocodile, Seahorse, Whatchamacallit and Serpent took the stage in hopes of winning over the voters and earning themselves a spot in the Super Six. Guest judge Cheryl Hines, AKA Ken’s co-star from his other series, I Can See Your Voice, joined in on the guessing game, and once again the contestants called upon their secret, celebrity friends to help dole out clues as to their identities.Immediately Seahorse kicked off the night with another jaw-dropping performance, this time with a version of “Baby One More Time” that practically sounded like it could be Britney Spears herself under that costume. The judges agreed that she would give Sun and Popcorn a run for their money in the finals, and sure enough she easily won the night with voters. Her identity wasn’t so easy to guess though. Jenny McCarthy was getting Kesha vibes, Ken was thinking Sia, and Cheryl went with Kellie Pickler. Whoever she is, the world will have to wait to find out for at least a couple more weeks. That left the three guys of Group B to duke it out, as only one of them could join Seahorse, Sun and Popcorn in the Super Six. Thanks to his performance of Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love,” it was swanky Crocodile and his video-game inspired clues who also got to move on. As a result, Whatchamacallit and Serpent landed in the bottom two, and as per usual the judges were all over the place as to who the guys could actually be.[video_embed id='2052719']RELATED: Ken Jeong reveals if there will be a 'Hangover 4' [/video_embed]

Leaning into His Guesses

Whatchamacallit and his rendition of Terror Squad’s “Lean Back” received the fewest votes, so he was the first to be unmasked. His earlier clue, that he has already won a championship, convinced Ken that it was NBA star Lonzo Ball, despite the other panelists fighting hard for guesses like J.B. Smoove, Michael Strahan and Carmelo Anthony.Sure enough, it was Lonzo who peeked out of that colourful costume, proving that even Ken gets at least one celeb right every season. It seems like all of that extra studying is paying off, but also the judge really knows his tall sports figures. He was, after all, the judge who correctly identified Thingamajig (Victor Oladipo) back in season two. Now hands up if you think he’s going to ride this win all the way to the finals?

An Emotional Unveiling

While Ken may have earned bragging rights for at least another week, he put all of them aside when Serpent was unveiled. The contestant received the second-lowest number of votes despite his goosebumps-worthy iteration of the Jonas Brothers’ “Cool,” and his clues had the judges feeling like he was Donald Faison or Taye Diggs. But Nicole—the panelist who seems to know everyone’s voice—just knew it was the singing surgeon, AKA Dr. Elvis Francois. She knew it from the moment he revealed that he’d once performed with one of them.Back when the pandemic first started Dr. Elvis showed Gal Gadot and her celebrity friends how it should be done when he uploaded a version of “Imagine” with his fellow Mayo Clinic resident William Robinson on piano. The video immediately went viral and made Dr. Elvis a household name during the pandemic. Since then, he’s released music for charity, appeared on Ellen, and now, officially, has been a Masked Singer contestant. Because sure enough it was him dressed up as the Snake.
“This is unbelievable,” he said. “This is a once in a lifetime situation… this is something I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.” But it was Ken who was truly touched by the fact that Dr. Elvis was on that stage, and he went off on one of his typical Ken tangents… except this time it was to rave about how much the good doctor has helped everyone during what’s been one of the roughest years on record for everyone. “Your version of ‘Imagine’ got us through the pandemic, man,” the doctor-turned-comedian told the doctor-turned-singer through tears. “I told my wife who’s also a doctor, like that’s what a doctor does. He’s an orthopedic surgeon. I was a generalist. This guy is smarter than any doctor on the planet and there’s just truly no one more talented than him. I’m crying because you’re more talented than me,” he added. “I just want you to know, man, you just got us through a difficult time and we love you so much.”The power of music, huh? That power continues next week on a special day when The Masked Singer moves to Thursday at 8 p.m. ET for one week only on CTV.[video_embed id='2079125']BEFORE YOU GO: Rockefeller Christmas tree getting mixed reaction [/video_embed]
