When it's 2019 but feels like 1998.

Monday’s episode of The Voice (Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2) began with coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton finalizing their teams and ending with a duet we’ve been waiting for all our lives—no, not the Battle Rounds, but the combo of John Legend and team advisor Usher. Somebody call Mekhi Phifer; we need to shoot a new music video. Before all that sweet, sweet duet and the ensuing battles the teams had to be finalized.

TEAM BLAKE

Kelly described Matthew as a sexy vampire and John described him as a mix between Tom Cruise and Christian Bale. Matthew’s grandma and sister had a dream about Blake Shelton, which is how a guy that sounded like Shawn Mendes picked Blake over Kelly. Can’t upset grandma.

TEAM KELLY

Gracee Shriver fits The Voice trifecta, which means she’s cute, young and sings country, so expect to see her in the competition until at least the semifinals. The 16-year-old from Oklahoma gave a retro-feeling performance of Kacey Musgraves’ "Rainbow" and said that her influence is Kelsea Ballerini. You know, the artist who opened for Kelly on tour? Kelly pointing out that she’s besties with country artists is always our favourite thing. Always. Gwen went the Blake route, literary, attempting to sway Gracee by naming Oklahoma landmarks. Team Kelly/Kelsea won.

TEAM GWEN

Gwen was waiting for a tiny pop princess and instead got a tiny rock princess, which we think is even better. Caroline is 16 years old and can shred on vocals, giving us some serious Joan Jett and, well, Gwen Stefani vibes. Rock kweens ftw.

TEAM LEGEND

John Legend finished his team with 16-year-old Zoe Upkins, who performed Monica’s "Angel of Mine" which came out way back in 1998, aka before she was born. She scored chair turns from Kelly, Blake and John, but not Gwen, who had instant regrets. "I blew it," Gwen admitted, adding "You're so talented." Kelly immediately gave up after seeing John turn, but Blake threw his cowboy hat in the ring. "I don’t seem like on paper the coach for you, but I promise you I am," said Blake. Maybe he is, but then John started singing "The Boy Is Mine" and we almost blacked out from awesomeness and came to with the realization that we needed a "Boy Is Mine" remix featuring John Legend ASAP. And who would be his ideal partner? Usher! The former Voice coach is back as Team Legend’s celebrity advisor and performed the hit Brandi and Monica single with Legend, updating the song for 2019 with a line about texting, during the rehearsal for Battle Rounds. It was amazing.  Also amazing was Zoe and Khalea’s duet, which ended with John picking Khalea and then fighting and winning Zoe back after Gwen and Kelly tried to steal the teen singer. The girl is his.
For the first time, Coaches have a save they can use in the Battle Round in addition to their steal, which anyone will contend is a smart rule. Seeing people go home is such a bummer, even when they’re complete strangers. The Battle Rounds included pairing with advisors, like returning Voice coach Usher with Team Legend, The Voice U.K. coach Will.i.am. with Gwen Stefani, Darius Rucker with Team Blake and Normani with Team Kelly. Speaking of Team Kelly, she already used a save to ensure her team remained stacked with Shane Q and Melinda Rodriguez. If you can sing the hell outta Sam Smith, you get to stay on The Voice.
