It was night one of the Knockout Round on Monday’s episode of
The Voice (Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2) and the emotional performances were capped off with an appearance from mega mentor James Taylor. It was only fitting that an artist who has written some of the most heartfelt songs of the last 50 years was on hand to help the remaining artists find their voice and even provide some wisdom to the coaches.Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, John Legend and Nick Jonas all made tough calls on Monday night, sending some singers home while putting their pride aside and fighting for others. It was like the Blind Auditions all over again, but this time the contestants had a few more weeks of experience and some scores to settle. Coaching, much like dating, is hard.
Megan Danielle vs. CammWess – Team Kelly
Team Kelly had one of the best and most emotional Knockouts of the night with her pairing of Megan Danielle and CammWess. The singers both went with emotional tracks and Megan even dipped her toe into Kelly’s discography to perform the deeply personal “Piece By Piece.” Admitting the song was one she too could relate to, Kelly accused Megan of Oprah-ing her. That means making her cry, FYI, which CammWess also did. Someone get Kelly a new car.The pair had one of the most evenly matched performances of the season and Kelly eventually made the difficult decision to go with Megan, but thankfully there are no tears for CammWess, who found himself being fought over by Nick and his former coach, John. The line of the night went to Nick Jonas, who stated the obvious. “I’m gonna say the same thing I saw to any friend getting back with an ex—why?” Plus, he has a huge fan base, while John’s fan base is decent, at best. Acting as a reminder to never smacktalk your friend’s ex, CammWess decided to go home to Team Legend. You can’t get cut by the same coach twice, right? Well, you can, but that would be way harsh.
Joanna Serenko and Zan Fiskum – Team Legend
So, remember all that stuff Nick said about not getting back together with you ex? JK, guys. Team Legend’s Joanna Serenko and Zan Fiskum both delivered their best performances of the season on Monday, making things tough on their coach as well as the rest of the dais who were busy pleading their case. Zan fought for every note in Brandi Carlile’s Mount Everest of a song and clawed her way to the top, climbing with each note of “The Story” and infusing raw emotion and energy into her triumphant rendition.Joanna Serenko delivered a breathy and beautiful performance of Bonnie Raitt covering John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.” The bittersweet timing of the pre-taped show comes only days after the
Grammy winner died from COVID-19 complications and acted as an impromptu tribute to Prine’s enduring influence on contemporary music. John decided to take Zan with him to the next round, leaving Joanna to be fought over by Blake and her former coach, Nick Jonas. It’s not often a 43-year-old man loses anything to Nick Jonas, but Joanna decided she and her Jo-Bro were better as friends. Joanna is a young woman and now she has her a cowboy.
Darious Lyles vs. Mike Jerel – Team Legend
It’s easy to get frustrated with John Legend for pairing two superstars together, but then we remembered how stacked Team Legend is this season. Plus, every other season. Darious was the perfect showman in his performance of “Mrs. Jones,” from his dapper overcoat, to his natural choreography, to his soaring high notes that reached the rafters. As for Mike, he swung for those same rafters with his performance of Bruno Mars’ “Versace on the Floor” and came up short a few times but was rewarded for taking a chance and stepping outside his comfort zone. We’re still waiting for someone to steal Darious. Kelly? Nick? Blake? Even Carson? Anyone?
Cam Spinks vs. Todd Tilghman – Team Blake
Pastor Todd brought the holy spirit on Monday night with his performance of Travis Tritt’s “Anymore,” taking the advice of his wife and going the country route. Happy wife, happy
Voice performance. Todd managed to keep his energy at a canned heat level and gave a soaring rendition of the love song, going first for Team Blake and possibly causing some nerves for his competitor. Cam unfortunately had his weakest performance of the season, but as Nick said, the country singer has enough talent to have a long career ahead of him. Just don’t let Todd open for you, Cam.
