So far, the latest season of The Amazing Race (Wednesdays, 7pET on CTV) has been full of high-stakes moments, frantic decisions, and bad cabs. Lots and lots of bad cabs. And while all of that continued on the latest episode, luck actually worked out in one team’s favour for a change.

Never Give Up

This week all of the teams seemed to have learned their lesson about reading the clues in full following last week’s face-palming episode. But one thing no one can control on this race is a bad taxi. When the teams landed in Asunción, Paraguay, both Will and James and Michelle and Victoria wound up switching cabs because no one seemed to know how to get to the orchestra from the clue. While that was probably super stressful and all, Kaylynn and Haley weren’t so lucky. After unknowingly being the recipients of some map shade at the airport by Will and James and DeAngelo and Gary, their luck worsened when their taxi driver got completely lost. So lost, that at one point she got out of the car and went into a house. As a result, the sisters were the last team to arrive at the orchestra, AKA a landfill where one team member needed to use discarded items to recreate a cello. A great lesson in the power of upcycling to be sure, but as it turned out it was an even greater lesson in the power of resilience. So many times before on this show when a team falls behind, the person doing the Road Block breaks down when they can’t get it right away. Not Kaylynn. It took the girl four hours—four hours!—but she stayed calm and cello’d on. Luckily for the realtor sisters, they weren’t the only ones having trouble with a challenge this week…[video_embed id='2069972']RELATED: Country star Gord Bamford talks about the importance of music programs in schools [/video_embed]

Alliances or Plain Old Targeting?

Will and James are all about alliances this season. As super fans that makes sense, but you have to wonder if they stopped to remind themselves that these are real people they’re racing against and targeting. Last week they made enemies of Leo and Alana by U-Turning them just because they could. And this week they conspired with DeAngelo and Gary to print out maps for basically everyone except Kaylynn and Haley. However you feel about that strategy though, it seems to be panning out for them. The guys managed to get enough help at the cello challenge to build their instrument in a timely way. And then, because they’re superfans who recently re-watched the season 20 episode of the show where teams had to balance bottles and dance, they were totally prepared when that challenged showed up on Wednesday night. Because of course they actually practiced balancing bottles on their heads at home. To backtrack a hot second, at the Detour, teams had to either dance with those aforementioned bottles or stack a motherload of watermelons. Both challenges were inspired by events in season 20, and judging by the flashbacks, both challenges kind of sucked. Naturally, Will and James sailed through, landing them their second, first-place finish in a row (and five thousand bucks apiece). Not all of the teams were so lucky though. Hung and Chee just couldn’t get the hang of balancing those bottles and switched Detours, but at least they were able to stack those watermelons like the best of them. (AKA like Riley and Maddison, who quickly nailed it with their teamwork.)

Losing Their Melons

And then there was DeAngelo and Gary. It was entertaining to see the footballers throw melons around at each other at first, but as their frustration grew you could totally see why these guys have a sibling kind of relationship. There were plenty of broken melons to be sure, and by the time they finally (finally!) stacked enough fruit to never want to eat it again, it had taken them about four hours to finish. That made the race for last place between the realtors and the footballer pretty close. It was dark when Gary and DeAngelo eventually got to that mat first. They were shocked when Phil Keoghan informed them they were the seventh team—they were so sure they’d been eliminated. Of course Kaylynn and Haley felt the exact same way, and they did come in last place. But once again luck kicked in and Phil doled out some good news: it was a non-elimination leg. That means when the show continues next week the pair are still in it, but they’ll have an extra Speed Bump to complete as a result. Naturally they were definitely there for the good news, but no one should be surprised if they’re a little choosier in selecting their cab drivers when the show continues next week in Paris.
