The Lede The Lede

It's been a minute since Insecure wrapped up its heartbreaking fourth season (that rift between Issa and Molly! Issa's block parties! Molly flubs it with the gorgeous Andrew! Lawrence had a child with Condola?!). While it's (incredibly) tough to swallow the information that this fifth season is Insecure's last, everything feels just a little more right in the world having Issa's crew back. Anyone else's jaws hurting from laughing?

Here's what went down:

The light and bubbly Season 5 premiere sees Issa, Molly, Kelli, Tiffany and Derek at their 10-year college reunion at Stanford (Issa Rae's actual alma mater) where Issa also speaks on an entrepreneurial panel. She's invited thanks to her budding event planning business, which she's officially named BLOcc (AKA: "Black Lives, Opportunities, Culture and Connection", but someone better keep reminding her). Also, that's pronounced "block," just FYI, definitely not "blow CC," as the panel host hilariously dubs it.

While Issa doesn't kill it at the panel and instead finds herself woefully out of place and questioning her choice (complete with a tried and true mirror rap), Molly sees sparks with an old college FWB named Omari.

Speaking of Issa and Molly, things are still a little awkward between them, though they do make an effort to hang out. Meanwhile, Kelli's unexpectedly and naturally featured on the school's In Memoriam list – but, yeah, she's very much alive and questioning how she stayed in people's memories and if it was more than a joke.

Issa and Molly also get robbed by an old friend named Cheyenne – yes – that has them in laughs like the old days. By episode's end, things get a little more real as we get a status update: Lawrence picks up Issa at LAX; they kiss, but once they get to her place, she says she's had time to think about their predicament and the unspoken conclusion seems to be they're over – again. Ugh.

Lines of the night:

"Yes b*tch, toot toot."
"Oh Kelli, she's gone?"
"She cusses so eloquently."
"Why she didn't take my shoes though?"
"She had the best stanky leg."

Songs of the night:

'Cause you know no one's got a better playlist than Insecure.

  • Nnena's "Fun"
  • The Dream's "I Luv Your Girl"
  • GS Boys' "Stanky Legg"
  • Ego Ella May's "Give A Little"
  • Too Short's "Blow The Whistle"
  • AG Club's "Hot Pink"
  • Kamaiyah's "Still I Rise"
  • Choker's "Master P"

Reactions of the night:

Insecure's first episode of the year had people thinking hard about their life choices (exactly like Issa and Molly) and, as usual, rolling at Kelli's constant one-liners. And that her podcast is apparently called "Prenny's Preguntas." I mean. Did Insecure invent belly laughs?

In Conclusion:

We're gonna miss you, Insecure, and we are beginning the mourning process...now.
