The 50-year-old multi-hyphenate showed us exactly how it’s done Sunday night when she walked the 2019 People's Choice Awards red carpet in a show-stopping, monochromatic strapless number from Vera Wang that spelled out the words “fashion icon” along the dress train. Add in some thigh-high boots with fishnets and those retro Hollywood evening gloves, and we were dead.Naturally, “fashion icon” also happened to be the name of the special trophy that Stefani was awarded during the star-studded awards show so finding a way to literally call that out was an expected, if still baller, flex. How else do you describe someone whose unique style not only inspired generations of fans, but that also spawned two separate fashion successful lines in L.A.M.B. and GX and created tons of imitators? We have to wonder what her ride-or-die Blake Shelton thought of the ensemble, though. Because as soon as Stefani took the stage to accept her award, the first thing she did was call our her beau while pointing to her head-to-toe look. Something in the way she seemed to imply the award (finally) justified her fashion rep made us really, really made us wish we could have heard their conversation in the limo on the way to the show. We’re sure he was supportive (because, Blake and all), but because we’ve watched them quite closely on The Voice we’re also fairly confident there was a bit of ribbing there, too. And that’s exactly why we can’t get enough of them as a couple. But we digress. When Stefani took the stage, she also schooled us all on how fashion isn’t necessarily for the rich. Growing up she said she had fond memories of her mother and her grandmother making their own outfits from fresh fabrics and second-hand shops alike, and how all she ever wanted to do was to continue that thread by carving out her own outfits that spoke to her. She revealed that at one point, she even hated the term “fashion” because she didn’t agree with what it stood for, and she just wanted to do her.Clearly, Gwen doing Gwen has panned out for the style pioneer, whether or not Blake Shelton needed to be convinced.“And now here I am with this award,” she said to the cheering crowd. “I’m going to give this to Zuma. Zuma wants this. Anyways, I love you guys, Thank you so much, anyone that’s ever listened to my music. Anyone that’s ever bought any of my L.A.M.B. clothes or GX or any of that stuff. It’s so incredible and you inspire me all of the time. I love you Blake Shelton, you’re a babe. I love all of you guys, thank you so much!”There you have it: Gwen Stefani--not a hollaback girl, but a fashion icon and adoring mom with great taste in clothing and, we're still confident in saying, men.[video_embed id='-1']Throwback: Gwen Stefani never expected 'Hollaback Girl' to turn into such a hit.[/video_embed]
