When it comes to royal rumbles, there are few feuds as notable as the one between Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. And The Crown clearly knows this, which is why the show has put that relationship front and centre in the new, official trailer.“Your majesty. I think we have enough respect for one another personally to ask ourselves some of the bigger questions, woman-to-woman. We are the same age after all,” Thatcher (Gillian Anderson) says in the opening, which features a tense sit-down with Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Coleman). “Really,” the Queen responds. “Just six months between us,” Thatcher says. “Oh? And who is the senior?” Elizabeth shoots back. “I am… m’am.” Thatcher responds, as the camera gives viewers the first real look at her somewhat smug but serious face.
Later, as Thatcher lays out her plan to make the country more self-reliant, the Queen warns her against making too many enemies. “What if one is comfortable with having enemies?” Thatcher poses. “Are you?” Elizabeth asks. “Oh yes,” the historic Iron Lady responds. As the trailer continues to unfold it becomes clear that these women won’t just have to contend with each other, but with the patriarchy itself. “Two women running the shop. That’s the last thing this country needs,” Prince Philip (Tobias Menzies) says as a photographer captures a shot of Thatcher surrounded by her male counterparts. “Perhaps that's exactly what this country needs,” the Queen icily responds.Thatcher isn’t the only potential enemy the Queen is contemplating in season four, though. The trailer also sets the stage for Princess Diana’s (Emma Corrin) debut when Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) is told it is his duty now is to find a woman that “People will love as a princess, and in due course, as a queen.” Cue a shot of Diana, exiting a building to a slew of paparazzi and fans.[video_embed id='2015657']RELATED: Elizabeth Debicki cast as Princess Diana in ‘The Crown’[/video_embed]“How many times can this family make the same mistake, paying the consequences each time?” Princess Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter) asks as the two-minute trailer comes to a close with shots of Di roller skating down the royal hallways and performing emotional, interpretive dances. “In time she will give up her fight and bend—as they all do,” the Queen Mother (Marion Bailer) ominously adds during a meal with her daughters. “And if she doesn’t bend, what then?” Elizabeth wonders out loud. “She will break,” adds Margaret.Talk about dark stuff. Add in the heavy historical issues that go down this season (which takes place in the late 1970s), like the Falklands War and the public’s increasing disdain of the crown, and it’s going to be a jam-packed installment for sure. The Crown returns to Netflix with season four on November 15.[video_embed id='2065495']Before you go: This viral dancing grandmother is the best thing on the internet right now[/video_embed]
