It was night four of the Blind Auditions on Tuesday’s episode of
The Voice (Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2) and without any blocks left, the coaches are getting more creative with their picks and pitches. Blake Shelton had a one-chair turn for pop singer
Payton Lamar, John Legend is fighting for country artists, and Kelly Clarkson and Gwen Stefani are making and breaking alliances with each new contestant that walks on stage. Up is down, left is right and one contestant actually said they didn’t know what to expect from Blake’s coaching style. It's been 19 seasons! The receipts are there! As the teams continue to fill up, the coaches are getting progressively more selective and that means some of the season’s best singers are getting only one-chair turns. Fewer turns means less playful bickering, which is the only type of bickering we find entertaining in 2020.
DESZ
Viewers likely met the Season 19 winner of
The Voice when Desz stepped on stage Monday night to deliver her chill-inducing cover of Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart.” The opera-trained singer, who has previously toured with Kanye West’s choir, gave a jaw-dropping performing of the 1996 Grammy-winning single. It takes a lot of courage and even more talent to take on Braxton’s goliath of a ballad and Desz delivered, showcasing her unique runs while still delivering the song’s iconic ad-libs note-for-note. Easily earning a four-chair turn, Desz’s performance had John on his feet and Kelly out of her chair. “You just sang ‘Unbreak My Heart’ on
The Voice and nailed it. What is happening?” said Kelly. “You just set the bar and it’s pretty high.” Calling her unique runs inventive and interesting, John was excited by Desz’s ability to personalize the song. After a cliff-hanger ending Monday, viewers had to wait until Tuesday’s show to see which of the four coaches Desz would pick, but in reality, she’s heading to the finals no matter whose jacket or t-shirt she’s wearing.

TANNER GOMES
Tanner Gomes may have had his country music-loving heart broken when he didn’t get a chair turn from Blake, but three out of four coaches ain’t too shabby. Tanner delivered a beautiful and sorrowful performance of Dustin Lynch’s “Cowboys and Angels,” earning a chair turn from Kelly that was "light years" ahead of John and Gwen, who appeared to be waiting out Blake. “The best thing for you is to be on a team that has no other country artists,” said Blake, acknowledging that his team is already stacked with achy, breaky hearts. John liked Tanner’s rich baritone, stage presence and hat (it’s a great hat), while Gwen pointed out that she’s been super into country music for the past five years and goes home with a country superstar every night (you know,
HER FIANCÉ). Kelly continued her years-long quest to be taken seriously as a country artist on
The Voice and it appears her campaign has been a success.

SAM STACY
Folk singer Sam Stacy arrived a season too late on
The Voice and missed his chance to meet James Taylor during Seasons 17 and 18. The Nebraska native performed Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” and earned chair turns from Kelly, Gwen and Blake. Kelly wanted to challenge Sam to explore his range, while Gwen and Blake both wanted to encourage more of Sam’s intimacy and emotion in his voice. Sam decided to go with wild card Blake as his coach, saying “I don’t know what your coaching style is like, but let’s do it.” After 19 seasons he doesn’t know Blake’s coaching style? Looks like we’ll have to wait for Season 20 before Blake finally comes out of his shell.

OLIVIA REYES
The Voice is all about finding singers with a strong and unique voice and Olivia Reyes has both. The 19-year-old singer has no performing experience but counts
The Voice’s season two winner Jermaine Paul as a family friend. Before her Blind Audition, Jermaine advised Olivia to soak up as much knowledge as she could from the experience. The teen’s intimate and powerful cover of Harry Styles’ “Falling” earned her chair turns from both Gwen and John, who were impressed by her talent and shocked by her lack of experience. Olivia should have plenty of knowledge to soak up as the newest member of Team Legend.
