On the heels of Monica and Brandy’s epic Verzuz Instagram Live battle a few weeks ago that set the internet ablaze, Verzuz has upped the ante again, this time with legendary R&B queens Patti LaBelle and Gladys Knight, who shared the physically-distanced stage to sing their most renowned hits and spill some tea on behind-the-scenes antics.Of course, just like the Brandy and Monica sesh, these two showed nothing but love and admiration for one another’s voices and music. But when they were joined unannounced by another iconic singer, Dionne Warwick, the internet could not contain itself, proving that the solidarity, love, and talent of Black women cannot be diminished. You might be old enough to remember the three of them collab on this 1991 R&B jam “Superwoman,” but as Dionne joined them on stage, the two other queens rose to their feet and all three sang Dionne’s 1985 smash hit, “That’s What Friends Are For,” freestyling along the way to make it sound like an entirely new song. Their moving rendition had Twitter counting their blessings to be living in the same era as three legends. “When Ms. Dionne joined Ms. Patti & Ms. Gladys the tears wouldn’t stop,” one user gushed. “The memories. The grace and class of these ladies. Now the wisdom. All this makes me realize how blessed I am to have grown up in a time when music meant something beautiful.”Many of the pair’s illustrious songs were paired up during the battle, and in case anyone was worried Gladys wouldn't do her hit song with her band The Pips, “Midnight Train To Georgia,” she had you covered. Literally. Because she covered it twice (once in round 6 and again in round 12)! Patti’s “If You Asked Me To” was preceded by her reminding everyone that her version of the song predated Céline Dion’s mega-hit cover, thank you very much. Gladys didn’t disappoint when she performed the eponymous song from the 1989 Bond film “Licence to Kill,” and Patti reminded us that her 1984 track, “New Attitude” still slaaaps.[video_embed id='1987731']MORE IN MUSIC: Jessie Reyez performs 'Kill Us' for etalk Open House [/video_embed]But probably the best moment of the entire battle was Patti getting so revved up as she exercised her pipes that she kicked off her shoes into the stratosphere. They were never heard from again. RIP forever-in-flight pumps. Then they started to chair dance. Then they were up out of their chairs and boogeying the night away. If there is something more joyful and delightful than Patti LaBelle kicking off her shoes, jumping out of her chair, and cutting a rug, we haven’t seen it.[video_embed id='2028858']BEFORE YOU GO: Grandfather meets granddaughter for the first time [/video_embed]
