First, the long-awaited, much-anticipated Friends reunion was happening. Then, the pandemic shut down all productions in Hollywood, and the reunion was postponed. Then, WarnerMedia bosses said they were eyeing the end of summer to film in front of a live studio audience. A lot has happened since then (specifically, coronavirus cases in the United States have spiked), but according to David Schwimmer (AKA Ross Gellar), the filming is still set to happen in August, as long as it can be done safely.“The hope is that this reunion special which we’d love to shoot—you know, it’s unscripted, it’s basically a really fun interview, and the some other surprise bits—but it’s supposed to happen maybe in August, the middle of August,” David told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show (weeknights at 11:35ET on CTV2).
Okay, could we BE any more excited?“But honestly we’re gonna wait and see another week or two if we all determine it’s really safe enough to do. And if not, we’ll wait until it’s safe,” he added. Jimmy asked if rumours that the cast would all be quarantining together during filming were true (how cute would that be?), but Schwimmer scoffed before telling the host all his costars are in L.A. together. And when he says "together," he really means it—some of the cast are hanging out quite regularly (masks ON, of course). Just over the weekend, Courteney Cox posted a video to her Instagram of her and Jen Aniston donning matching masks while their doggies had a play date. “Just put it on!” the subtitles on the video scream. We KNEW Monica would be hugely into masks.[video_embed id='1957155']RELATED: ‘Friends’ reunion likely coming at end of summer [/video_embed]While we wait for The One Where Everybody Reunites, David shared some fun anecdotes from his time on the show, including how he initially turned down the role. Explaining that he had done a sitcom about a year-and-a-half before Friends where he feel like his ideas weren't welcome, he was grateful when that show was cancelled and wasn't eager to sign onto another.“I was like, ‘I’m never doing another sitcom.’ I moved back to Chicago, and I was doing theatre with my company, and I got the call from my agent about Friends, and I just said, ‘No. I’m not doing it,’” he told Fallon. It took a phone call from legendary director James Burrows (of Taxi and Cheers fame) to bring him out to California to audition. That’s when creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman told him the character of Ross was written with his voice in mind, so of course he had to do it. And the rest is Friends history. As we draw closer to the hugely-anticipated reunion, David couldn’t help but answer that age-old Ross and Rachel question that has divided viewers for nearly 25 years.“Yeah it’s not even a question. They were on a break."Kay, just checking.Watch The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon weeknights at 11:35ET on CTV2.[video_embed id='1997256']BEFORE YOU GO: Our hosts can't get enough of this dog standing up for pets [/video_embed]
