The semi-finals are officially on for Season 4 of World of Dance (next Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 pm ET on CTV) and that means the dancers along with judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo are getting that good Finals stage lighting. (See ya later, low ceilings from the Duels.) Tuesday featured six performances, including our two beloved Canadian crews and since there are only four spots in next week’s finals, that means only two groups from this week’s episode made it through. BRB, dancing through our tears. For the first time this season, there are no Call Backs or Redemption Rounds to give dancers a second chance, which means unlike the first 20 times the judges have said it, now it’s really time to leave it all on the floor. It’s good motivation, but so is $1 million in prize money. Let’s dance![video_embed id='1966249']RELATED: Derek Hough’s latest project is all about inspiring kids to move in new ways[/video_embed]
JEFFERSON Y ADRIANITA
Most performers excel in footwork or in tricks, but Jefferson and Adrianita dominate in both categories. Starting and ending their performance with a kiss (dos besos), the couple danced like their feet were on fire, nailing the footwork and delivering their intricate choreography at top speed. The pair took their only "breaks" to perform a series of death-defying tricks that are new to World of Dance, showcasing their incredible athleticism, creativity and most importantly, trust in each other. The couple were rewarded for their major risks, coming in first place and earning a well-deserved spot in the Finals. We are equal parts excited and nervous to see what they’ll do next. Stay safe for baby Derek.Score: 94.3
GEOMETRIE VARIABLE
Math. Ties. Umbrellas. Right angles. Alone, none of these things are sexy, but in the hands, arms, legs and bodies of three Frenchmen, Géométrie Variable make the unsexy into a shockingly seductive performance. JLo didn’t see it coming. Derek wants to learn tie-o-graphy. Ne-Yo described it as "sexy math dancing." Altogether it was more than enough for the trio to earn the second highest score of the night and easily cement their spot in the finals.Score: 94
THE YOUNG CAST
Canada was well represented this week thanks to BC’s GRVMNT and Quebec’s The Young Cast. After trying out multiple times, the French crew displayed incredible perseverance throughout the season, fighting their way through the Call Backs and Redemption Round. On Tuesday, the crew from Quebec opened the show with an impressive performance to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” raising the stakes on their lifts and tricks, zeroing in on their incredible formations and creating several moments of greatness. It was exciting, it was creative, it was magnifique. Unfortunately, the team were knocked out of second place by fellow French dancers Géométrie Variable, but they should still be proud of their hard-fought journey.Score: 90.7
KURTIS SPRUNG
Contemporary dancer Kurtis Sprung started the competition in the Qualifiers being critiqued for not connecting with the emotion in his performance. On Tuesday, Kurtis brought himself and Derek to tears with his raw and visceral routine set to James Blunt’s “Monsters.” Channeling his difficult relationship with his father, Kurtis delivered one of the most theatrical performances of the season, beautifully portraying the struggle and the reconciliation between the two. “I thought it was interpretive and that is a real testament to your artistry,” said JLo. It wasn’t enough for Kurtis to make it to the finals, but it did earn him a possible job offer from Derek. Plus, he can finally put his shirt back on.Score: 90.3
