The Battle Round concluded on Monday’s episode of The Voice (Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2) and after 18 seasons, Blake Shelton still loves to swoop in and save the day. Using his only Steal for the round to scoop up one of the season’s most beloved performers, Shelton received actual hugs from his fellow coaches in an unprecedented show of support. It’s a lot of work getting out of those giant chairs. While it may seem counterintuitive for the coaches to be excited that their competitor scored one of the season’s top singers for his team, the coaches still want to have a front row seat to the best singers, not just the singers who are left over at the end of the night.Night three of the Battle Round featured the final appearance by this year’s guest mentors. Hero Blake Shelton was once again working with popstar Bebe Rexha. Kelly Clarkson teamed up with English hitmaker Dua Lipa, John Legend and his Grammy-winning duet partner Ella Mai offered their advice, and Nick Jonas and his big bros Joe and Kevin came together on The Voice stage once again.Monday night also included the announcement of this season’s Mega Mentor. In a poetic move, Season 17 Mega Mentor Taylor Swift is being followed by her namesake, James Taylor. Prepare for a Knockout Round of fire and rain.

Cedrice vs. Thunderstorm Artis – Team Legend

There’s a reason the battle between Cedrice and Thunderstorm was saved as the final performance of the round and that reason is because viewers need an entire week to recover from the emotional marathon. You know the satisfied tired feeling that comes after a good cry? That’s what it’s like listening to Cedrice and Thunderstorm perform together. Admittedly, John pairing two of the season’s standout singers together seemed, is in a word, dumb. But for the sake of fairness, and also because the EGOT winner likely knew whichever artist he didn’t choose was going to be stolen, John paired the two incredible singers. Cedrice’s vocals are as captivating as her presence and Thunderstorm has a voice that would be amongst the top of our desert island picks. John’s gamble paid off and Blake quickly scooped up Cedrice for his team in a move that cleared the benches and had all three coaches congratulating their competitor. That’s the power of Cedrice and Thunderstorm.

Megan Danielle vs. Samantha Howell – Team Kelly

At the risk of sounding old and out of touch, sometimes age is used to move through artists on The Voice that may not be up to the caliber of their older competitors simply because what they do impressive.* (That asterisk indicates the silent ‘for their age.’) That is not the case with Team Kelly’s Megan Danielle and Samantha Howell. The teen titans came out swinging and both delivered some of the best performances of the Battle Round. Period. Megan had the stronger performance of the night, showing off folksy, classic country twang, which earned her the win. No surprise, Kelly used her only Save for Samantha, who let nerves get the better of her during some notes on Monday night, but was still clearly one of this season’s most talented singers. The kids are alright.

Jon Mullins vs. Todd Tilghman – Team Blake

Nick Jonas made good on his word on Monday night. After four-chair turn Todd Tilghman squeaked by his teammate and new bestie Jon Mullins to clinch the win for Team Blake in one of the night’s best battles, Nick didn’t waste any time stealing Jon, a move he promised to make in the Blinds after regretfully not turning for the talented singer. It’s still shocking that Jon was a one-chair turn. And that Todd has eight kids. That’s so many kids.

Arei Moon vs. Samuel Wilco – Team Nick

One of the most evenly matched pairs of the Battle Round was Arei Moon and Samuel Wilco, who performed John Waite’s 1984 hit “I Ain’t Missing You.” Samuel has a deceptively deep and rich voice that was a beautiful backdrop to Arei’s rich, higher registry. Both artists gave their best performances on stage, which is exactly what the coaches like to see. Nick went with Arei as the team member moving on to the Knockout Rounds, but the decision could have easily gone either way, which makes it both a great match and a frustrating one.
