Good news! The Batwoman creators aren't going to "Aunt Viv" Kate Kane. After actress Ruby Rose made the shocking decision in May not to return to the CW show for a second season, rumours floated about the internet that her character of Kate Kane would be recast. Now we know that instead of trying to give our heroine a new face and voice, the creators have decided to pivot entirely, and create a totally new character who will don that Batwoman cape.Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the new female character will be named Ryan Wilder, and the search is on now for an actress to fit the bill.According to the report, a casting notice for the character which was briefly posted to Reddit before being removed by moderators, describes Ryan thusly, “She's likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed [. . .] A girl who would steal milk from an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly disciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.” That sounds rather different from the Kate Kane character fans have come to love—it should be interesting to see how the series moves forward. The casting call for Ryan also encourages submissions from the LGBTQ+ community.Ruby Rose posted to her official Instagram recently to clear up rumours about her reasons for leaving the show, which was filmed in Vancouver. Including a fan video with her note, she said in part, “It wasn’t an easy decision but those who know, know […] I have stayed silent because that’s my choice for now but know I adore you all. I’m sure next season will be amazing also. Xxx.”
Later in the comments section, Rose responded to a resentful fan by saying, “Don’t believe everything you read by anon sources online. Also I lived in Vancouver for a year working on the mountains when I was 18 because I love that city! I’ve also worked in other places in Canada... perfect beautiful country.”[video_embed id='1966946']RELATED: Ruby Rose reflects on ‘Batwoman’ exit [/video_embed]Ruby certainly had her fair share of drama during her short one-season stint on Batwoman. After news of her casting broke, she faced backlash for not being "gay enough" to play the openly out character. Then, last year, Rose had to undergo emergency surgery after suffering an injury for a stunt that nearly left her paralyzed. “I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal cord. I was in chronic pain and yet couldn’t feel my arms,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Australian Shepherd performs trustfall with owner in epic slow motion [/video_embed]
