Tuesday was the final night of the Qualifier Round on Season 4 of
World of Dance (Tuesdays at 10 pm ET on CTV) and with spots filling up quickly, judges Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo and Derek Hough were tougher than ever on contestants. Physical injuries, emotional trauma and the return of a surprising one-hit wonder all made for a memorable final night before next week’s Call Backs. This week’s episode also included two more Canadian groups, including the Itty Bitty Crew and the Gigabots. Although neither crew made it through to the next round, they both showed that we've got some impressive young talent in the dance arena that are sure to make more appearances in seasons to come.
CB ACTION
Injuries are a part of dance and for Argentinian street dance group CB Action, one member’s fractured knee meant the group had to scramble to re-choreograph their routine the night before their performance at the Qualifiers. The dance crew were in tears telling the judges about their injured friend, which made their performance to Vengaboys’ “Boom Boom Boom Boom” even more jarring. “I’m gonna be straight up. When that song started, I was like, ‘Noooo!’” said Hough. “But what you guys did to it made me love it.” Amazingly, CB Action made both Hough and viewers realize that “Boom Boom Boom Boom” was actually . . . a bop? It only took 22 years, but the Vengaboys
are back in town. CB Action made it through to the Call Back round, with JLo noting, “We want to see what you can do with a little less trauma attached to everything.”
KURTIS SPRUNG
Even in 2020, being a male dancer can be tough, but being a male dancer in a small, blue collar town is no doubt a challenge. Kurtis Sprung got emotional talking about the horrendous bullying he received growing up, showing incredible strength and resilience then and now. The contemporary dancer brought his athleticism and talent to his performance, but the judges were worried that he wasn’t connecting enough to the emotion in the piece. Kurtis received a Call Back from JLo, but Ne-Yo and Derek sent Kurtis straight through to the Duels.
GEOMETRIE VARIABLE
In their intro, French trio Géométrie Variable spoke about their desire to share their art with others. Honestly, it felt a wee bit pretentious (maybe it was the turtlenecks?), but that was before the incredible group performed on stage. Many groups have short interludes with locking and formations, but rarely does a group have enough precision and discipline to perform an entire routine with such a high level of intricate movements. Fusing art and yes, geometry, the trio delivered the emotion of Tove Lo’s “Habits” and were an easy Yes from all three judges.
MADDY PENNEY
World of Dance typically celebrates when dancers don’t pick a lane and instead incorporate several styles into their performance, but that wasn’t the case with Maddy Penney. The ballerina did almost too much, shunning the rigidity of ballet without fully embracing the emotion of contemporary. Her incredible technical skills got her through to the Duels after JLo convinced Ne-Yo to change his Call Back vote to a Yes, but we’re going to have to see either no tears or way more tears in Maddy’s next performance.
