The Knockouts continued on Monday’s episode of The Voice (Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV2) and once again proved that Season 19 is filled with talented performers representing each genre. Coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton worked with their teams to help the aspiring artists prepare for their biggest performance yet. In making the singers better, the coaches also made their own jobs tougher. It’s so hard to say goodbye. The contestants have been allowed to choose their songs for the Knockouts this season, which has garnered mixed results. While some singers have shown a firm grasp on their strengths, other contestants opted for songs they love but may not be well suited to sing. Just because you like a song doesn’t mean it will like you back.Mega mentor U-S-H-E-R was back on Monday to send pulses racing and prove that sometimes you *should* meet your heroes. Filled with inspiring one-liners, Usher helped each singer deliver their best performance possible. “You put in the time for yourself, so show up for yourself,” said Usher. As Kelly said, stitch that on a pillow.

CARTER RUBIN V. CHLOE HOGAN – TEAM GWEN

Gwen Stefani may already be a mom to three boys, but she’s ready to adopt a fourth. Gwen promised 14-year-old Carter during the Blind Auditions that she would be like his second mom and she’s followed through, screaming “My baby!” at the end of Carter’s stunning performance of “You Say” just like a supportive, embarrassing mom. John called Carter a prodigy and Kelly, who was in tears, told Carter “That’s like a finale performance. It broke me in the most amazing ways.”Even with Carter’s beautiful and nuanced delivery of the Lauren Daigle hit, the Knockout wasn’t a runaway win. Chloe stunned the judges with her cover of SWV’s “Weak,” which John noted had a higher degree of difficulty. Applauding all her "cool and unexpected" moments during the performance, John used his only Steal for Chloe, which was bad news for Blake, who said he would have snagged Chloe if he still had his Steal left.Winner: CarterSteal: Chloe to Team Legend

DESZ V. SID KINGSLEY – TEAM KELLY

It’s difficult to determine whether Desz was more excited to perform Tevin Campbell’s “Can We Talk” or meet Usher, but we’ll assume she was equally thrilled. “His eyes really do twinkle,” said Desz after meeting the Mega Mentor. “Usher is going to usher me in.” We’re going to need more pillows for all these one-liners. Desz was able to compose herself long enough to rehearse and later give a show-stopping performance. “It’s like you have a chokehold on the song,” said Gwen. While the coaches expected the greatest from four-chair-turn Desz, Sid was a massive surprise. After being stolen from Team Legend, Sid has continued to improve and delivered a soulful rendition of Foy Vance’s “Make It Rain,” earning a standing ovation from the coaches. Kelly said that the pairing will go down as one of the best Knockouts ever and eventually made the decision to stick with Desz. That left Sid up for grabs, with his former coach John Legend hitting his Steal button followed by Blake. As host Carson Daly said, it was Two Steals and a Sid, coming this fall to NBC. “I think I would regret coming here and not working with as many coaches as possible,” said Sid, who finally honoured his mother’s request and picked Blake. “I love you and I love your mother,” added Shelton.Winner: DeszSteal: Sid Kingsley to Team Blake

JUS JON V. JIM RANGER – TEAM BLAKE

The two men gave vastly different performances, with Jus Jon showing off his undeniable charisma and showmanship with his performance of Bruno Mars’ “Finesse.” On the flip side, Pastor Jim took everyone to church with Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind.” Jim was in tears when speaking to the coaches about the powerful song, saying that he hoped its message of kindness would reach viewers. The coaches were blown away by both performances but struggled to pick a winner between two vastly different songs and artists. “His performances take me back to the first time I got MTV and some of that '90s pop music,” said Blake of Jus Jon, adding that he struggles when separating his identity as Jus Jon’s coach and fan. Gwen said she was shocked Jus Jon wasn’t already signed and added that she loved his effortless approach to performing. The coaches were also full of praise for Jim. “Your voice has this well-worn, rugged quality to it that’s very inviting,” said John of the rock and folk singer. “It really worked.” Coach Blake also loved Jim’s performance and applauded his team member for moving the coaches and the audience.Winner: Jim Ranger
