Everything we know so far about And Just Like That… season 2

Aidan is back, this is not a drill

The new trailer for season 2 of the Sex And The City spinoff And Just Like That has dropped, and we couldn’t help but wonder … what can we expect from this season?

Will there be sex talk? Definitely. Will there be cocktails over brunch? Most definitely. Will all of our favourite characters (and some not-so-fave) return? For the love of fashion, where is Samantha?! Let’s take a closer look.

When season 1 came to a close, we left Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristen Davis) in some interesting places. Miranda had left her longtime love and husband Steve (David Eigenberg) for Carrie’s non-gender-binary boss Che (Sara Ramirez), Charlotte and hubby Harry (Evan Handler) were dealing with the terrible teen years of their daughters Rose and Lily, and our gal Carrie had lost the love of her life and hubby Mr. Big (Chris Noth)  to a Peloton-induced heart attack.

We hear her say in the trailer that she’s "having a lot of 'exit out of grief' sex." "It's just sex," she quips, also noting that "life's too short not to try something new." The last image we got of Carrie in season one was of her kissing her podcast producer Franklyn Hernandez (Ivan Hernandez) in the elevator at work. So it’s safe to assume that’s where we’re going to find her off the top of season 2.

A lot of the new characters we met in season one are back like Nicole Ari Parker  who plays Lisa Todd Wexley, Sarita Choudhury, who plays Seema Patel, and if the trailer is to be believed, yes Che is still with Miranda.

Miranda has ditched her graying hair and has gone back to her ginger bob, and we can see the pair smooching up a storm in the trailer. Variety reported last year that the new season will pick up three weeks after the last season ended, and Ramirez told the outlet that “The first season was judging a book by its cover, and Season 2 is about reading the book. One of my burning passions about Season 2 is Che,” they said. “I want to show the dimension of Che that people didn’t see, for whatever reason — because they were blinded, out of fear or terror. I want to show more of Che rather than less of Che. Like, really.”

From the trailer, we can also see that Anthony Marentino (Mario Cantone) is back and we’ll be interested to see how the show addresses the absence of Anthony’s husband Stanford Blatch, played by the late-great Willie Garson, who died of cancer after filming of season 1 wrapped. We doubt they will recast the role, so this will be a plot point to pay attention to.

There are also new characters to expect this season! The official AJLT Instagram account showed Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Sam Smith on set “up to something holy,” so will they be a recurring character or a one-time cameo?

Right now there’s no word if Smith will play themself or a fictional character.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King has also hinted that the most-beloved character (who arguably put the “sex” in Sex and the City) Samantha will be back in season 2. How, if Canadian actress Kim Cattrall has long refused to reprise her role? As we saw in season 1, the Samantha character was still present, just off-screen, as we saw Carrie and Samantha texting.

Many fans didn’t buy the feud written into the script which suggested that Samantha exited the friendship over Carrie choosing a different PR person, with many die-hard pointing out that Samantha was the most loyal and least judgemental of the group. So we shall see if the texting will morph into something more like the Samantha we know and love.

Now, as you’ve already seen the trailer, we cannot hold off any longer. Yes, John Corbett fans, AIDAN SHAW IS BACK.

Since January, both SJP and the AJLT Instagram accounts have been teasing us with photos from the set of the show, where we clearly see Aidan and Carrie back together and smooching.

Back during the run of SATC, fans were very clearly in one of two camps: Team Big or Team Aidan. The love triangle between Carrie, Big, and Aidan dominated seasons 3 and 4 of the show, with Aidan last making an appearance in the second SATC movie, married with kids, but still clearly interested in Carrie, leading

to a forbidden kiss.

Now that Big has been killed off, this opens the door for Aidan to swoop back in. Honestly, Miranda famously said back during SATC that she should have ended up with Aidan, and he was always the better boyfriend. He was kind to her friends (remember when he came to Miranda’s aid when she wrenched her neck?), he wanted Carrie to meet his parents (Big was against that), and he loved her so much, he took her back after she cheated on him.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King told Entertainment Weekly that bringing Aidan back was always the plan.

"I personally knew I was killing Big in season 1. I knew that when I started and I felt very strongly about that," King told the outlet. "I started season 2 knowing I was bringing Aidan back, and I felt very strongly about that. How, when he shows up, what happens is all part of the great fun and puzzle of writing a series, to somehow give people what they're expecting and yet find ways to have people grow and still be that person."

But is Aidan still married to unseen wife Kathy? King actually gave the outlet a spoiler here.

"I would not make Carrie Bradshaw a home-wrecker. That's the biggest leak I can give you. That's not the story. The story is [they're] open for business. They're both single. You know how she's single. You don't know how Aidan's single."

And there you have it. AJLT season 2 is set to premiere on Crave in Canada in June. You can still watch season 1 on the platform now.
