Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are real-life Ted Lassos in doc about their new Welsh football club

'Welcome to Wrexham' is looking like the docuseries version of 'Ted Lasso.'

Ryan Reynolds may own many businesses, but he sure has a way of making the guests in his commercials feel awkward. First, it was Rick Moranis for Mint Mobile, then it was LeVar Burton for Aviation Gin, and now it’s basically all of Wales. Great job, Deadpool.

The Canadian superstar joined forces with It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia creator and actor Rob McElhenney to promote their new docuseries on their recently-purchased Wrexham football club, Welcome To Wrexham. The two actors bought the club last year, but if their Welsh translator Maxine is anything to go by, the country of Wales is none too pleased with the Hollywood owners.

“The tall, skinny one does movies,” Maxine informs in Welsh, eschewing her translating duties. “The muscular one sells cream cheese from Philadelphia or something.”

“There’s no way these two can manage a football club,” she continues as Rob and Ryan try to figure out the Welsh word for Philadelphia. “And the one with the toupé thinks Wales is in Scotland.”

Okay, is this a real doc or elaborate promo for Ted Lasso season 2? We're fine with either.

Maxine is not.

“Neither of these men have ever pleased their wives sexually. They will both die alone in their mansions, gripped fiercely by the cold, indifferent embrace of pure loneliness," she continues.

“WTF was that?” Ryan gasps while Rob tries to figure out who hired her. Wales hired her, fellas, and the country thanks you.

Despite all the awkwardness, we do get to see some action-packed, fast-paced sequences from Welcome to Wrexham. There are shots of the Wrexham team scoring goals, jumping in each other’s arms, and the fans losing their minds in the stands, so when the docuseries premieres, it will definitely be one to watch.

Fans must be hyped to see it too because this bonkers trailer has been trending on YouTube since it dropped.

Wrexham, the oldest football club in Wales, has been fan-owned since 2011, so when the club confirmed the rumours last year that both Ryan and Rob had put in a bid to buy the club (which currently plays in English football’s fifth tier), it seemed to come out of left field. After their bid was approved, they immediately invested £2 million in the club (around $2.5 million USD).

Their involvement led to this docuseries being commissioned by FX, which already has been given a two-season greenlight. In addition to charting the games, athletes, and plays, it will follow the two actors as they learn the ropes of football ownership (Ted. Lasso. We're just saying.).

“Rob and Ryan will take fans inside the sport as never before, pairing their genuine love for the game with the welcome challenge of building on the heritage of this club,“ Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX Entertainment, said in a statement.

Pay attention to the last seconds of the trailer, because Rob and Ryan try unsuccessfully to get a leg up on each other in Welsh. “Can you say nobody wants to see another Deadpool?” Rob asks a humourless and stone-faced Maxine.

“Say, ‘I can’t wait for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16: The Dead Horse,’” Ryan jabs right back. What’s the Welsh translation for “sick burn, bro?”
