Earlier this year the first Black Bachelor Matt James chose Rachael Kirkconnell on the final episode of his season. There was no engagement but they expressed their love and devotion to each other. That all came crashing down when they very painfully broke up during the After The Final Rose special.

But now, Matt is confirming rumours that they are officially back on, adding that they got back together because Rachael gave him an ultimatum. Ah, romance.

“She was like, ‘If you’re going to make this work, let’s do it. But, if you’re not going to make it work, I’m going to let you do your own thing,'” he said revealed Tuesday during an interview on the Pomp Podcast with host Anthony Pompliano.

“That’s really all I needed. It was an ultimatum that I needed,” he continued. “It’s been great. It was honestly a commitment that we made to each other that we were going to work on the relationship.”

You heard it here first, friends. Ultimatums = c’est l’amour.

“There came a point in time where it was evident that my working on the relationship looked different than Rachael's because I wasn't really honoring that commitment that I made to working on the relationship," the 29-year-old added, still rocking the I-am-a-single-man beard.

Speaking to the tumult and turmoil of their relationship, Matt said on the Pomp Podcast, “There were rough patches in our relationship, we actually broke up for a moment. We're back together."

He added, “Everything we've been through, everything she's been through, she's stuck right by my side. She's continued to have a positive attitude. It's one of the many things I love about her."

Last month, news went around that Matt and Rachael were def seeing each other again, after being spotted together out and about a handful of times. Matt even admitted he wanted to “focus on their relationship” but wouldn’t give more details than that. Looks like they're ready to go public again.

During season 25 of The Bachelor, as we saw Matt and Rachael fall in love on the show, social media resurfaced some Facebook photos of Rachael from 2018 where she attended racially insensitive antebellum-themed parties. She apologized for that behaviour, and it also prompted Matt to release a statement about it.

It all came to a head during the After The Final Rose special where Matt admitted to host Emmanuel Acho that he couldn’t be with Rachael for her behaviour, despite her apology and immersion in education.

Since then, we hope she's taken her education seriously (this week, she posted a donation link to the George Floyd Memorial Foundation on the one year anniversary of his murder) and it seems the couple is even talking about moving in together.

Look, life is short, so if you can find love out there, we are all for it. Not all Bachelor and Bachelorette romances last, so here’s hoping this happy couple can beat the odds.
