This is going to be legen – wait for it – dary! Hulu has nabbed Hilary Duff to star in a 10 episode series sequel to the smash hit TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother. The show will be called, of course, How I Met Your Father. The series will follow Sophie (Duff) as she tells her story of how she met the love of her life in 2021 when her and her friends were trying to figure out how to fall in love in the age of dating apps.

The new series will see the original HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas serve as executive producers alongside This Is Us writing duo Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. If you were bummed about the Lizzie McGuire reboot falling apart, now is your time to rejoice!

Hilary herself ecstatically posted about the news in an IG video, quoting HIMYM character Barney’s famous catch phrase, “Suit up!”

“I’m excited about my job if you can’t tell!” she laughed, “You guys, today’s the day! The news came out that I am going to be shooting How I Met Your Father!”

“I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,” she also said in a publicity statement.  “As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honoured and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby. Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius. Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and 20th families. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!”

Aptaker and Berger also released a statement that gave us a glimpse into their cheeky humour we can hopefully expect from the show. “We can’t wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew, and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City. And we hope nobody thinks it’s weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff’s voice.”

Haaaaaa, we see what you did there.

This isn’t the first time a reboot of HIMYM has attempted to lift off. Way back in 2013, CBS ordered a pilot for How I Met Your Dad (note the “dad” and not “father”) which starred actress/director Greta Gerwig with Meg Ryan attached as the narrator. They shot the pilot but it wasn’t picked up by the network. For that, we are grateful because Gerwig wouldn’t have given us the beauty of Little Women otherwise!

Hilary can currently be seen in the final seventh season of Younger, and creator Darren Star has reportedly been developing a spinoff that would focus the attention on the character Kelsey Peters, played of course by Hilary. That is still in talks and nothing has been set in stone yet, but we wonder how she would be able to do both How I Met Your Father and a Younger spinoff at the same time!

While we ponder that, it seems Hilary and HIMYM fans are loving this news today.

All we can hope is that the ending of How I Met Your Father isn’t the same as the original series because … yeah.
