Annie Murphy is heading for a time loop. The award-winning Schitt’s Creek star has booked her latest gig by officially joining the cast of Russian Doll. Now, fans everywhere are jamming out to Harry Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” in anticipation.

News of Murphy’s casting comes about a week after the Netflix series finally cranked up production on its second season. The Amy Poehler, Leslye Headland, and Natasha Lyonne produced show stars Lyonne as the series lead, Nadia Vulvokov. The first season dropped back in February 2019, when it followed Nadia in a Groundhog Day type time-loop on her 36th birthday. Eventually, she met a man named Alan (Charlie Barnett) who was stuck in the same loop, reliving the same day over and over again. By the finale the pair believed they had figured out the glitch, but it was unclear where the second season would go.

As per TVLine, which first reported Murphy’s casting, there are no details available just yet as to her character. But the publication reports that she will be full-time this season (rather than guest-starring), joining season one supporting cast members Greta Lee, Yul Vazquez, Elizabeth Ashley, Ritesh Rajan, and Dascha Polanco. Whatever Murphy plays, it seems like a pretty good gig to get considering Russian Doll was a serious contender at the awards circuit in 2019. At the time the critically acclaimed first season racked up more than a dozen Emmy nominations and was quickly renewed.

Murphy herself is no stranger to the awards circuit. In the past year, the 34-year-old Ottawa-born actor was nominated for best-supporting actress in a comedy at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics Choice Awards for her role as Alexis Rose on Schitt’s Creek. She also took home the Emmy for the role last fall when the series made Emmys history by sweeping all of the major comedy categories.

In addition to joining the second season of Russian Doll, Murphy will also star in the anticipated dark series Kevin Can F**k Himself on AMC. That series, which debuts this summer, features Murphy playing a woman who snaps after her sitcom-inspired husband pushes her just a little too far. “Being in that loopy world [of Schitt’s Creek] was a truly wonderful loopy world to be in,” Murphy said during a panel for Kevin last month during the virtual Television Critics Association press tour. “I loved every minute [but] after Schitt's Creek I was so worried that I was going to get stuck in this blonde loopy land. I really wanted to do something significantly different.”

It may be too early to tell, but from the sounds of things, it looks like she found both.
