Johnny Depp makes his first talk show appearance promoting the new Pirates of the Caribbean film on Thursday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, but he doesn't exactly make it easy for the host.

Ellen puts Johnny in the "hot seat" to ask some fun and fairly innocent questions like "What's your favourite part of your body?" and "Who was your first celebrity crush?" and is met with... a lot of awkward pauses.

After suggesting the back of his head is his favourite part of his body, Ellen presses for more: "Do you like your ass?"

"Wow. Like it? I accept it," Johnny responds.

Depp appears on the talk show to promote Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of the wildly successful Disney franchise.

And while he doesn't exactly sell it ("If you're not in it, you should see it"), Depp does give a thoughtful explanation as to why he visits children's hospitals dressed as his character Jack Sparrow.

"You meet all these amazing kids that are dealing with very adult illnesses and you see this incredible courage in their faces," he says. "It's the parents who are just falling apart. And so I don't break character, I just try to sort of do as much stupid stuff as I can to make 'em laugh."

Depp was plagued with negative headlines over the past year, with Heard alleging he abused her. His film Alice Through the Looking Glass, released just after the divorce news and allegations came out, then bombed at the box office
