CTV’s taking fans behind-the-scenes of creating a hit song, through its new series The Launch, the network announced Thursday.  Premiering in 2018, the series will follow a group of unsigned musicians as they create a new original song, mentored by a panel of hit makers, including Scott Borchetta.

The world-renowned record executive who counts Taylor Swift among his many success stories, has signed on as a mentor and executive producer for the series, which he says will put a new spin on talent competitions.

"We're going to basically start at the finale if you will. We're going to start with a great song, great production team, a couple of great celebrity artists and guest judges and match up the artist to the song," he told our Ben Mulroney in the etalk newsroom Thursday.

As the owner of Big Machine Label Group, Scott's roster of stars also includes Reba McEntire, Florida Georgia Line, Rascal Flatts, Thomas Rhett among other impressive musical talents. Performers on the show therefore stand to gain a lot from the producer, responsible for helping his artists sell more than 400 million albums throughout his career, with 165 songs going to #1. So, what's he looking for in a participant?

"We're looking for originality. We're looking for really a lot more of character and charisma. Technically you can be a great singer, but really it's about what's that special artist thing."
