Taylor Swift has a long history with awards shows, what with being upstaged by rappers and certain label heads trying to block her from performing her own songs. So you can’t really blame a girl for wanting to ensure she’s showing up for a reason, right? Well, according to
Page Six that’s exactly why T-Swift wasn’t at the Grammys when they went down at the Staples Centre on January 26. Apparently she decided to invoke some of those “Me!” lyrics and wouldn’t show up and perform unless the powers-that-be confirmed a win for Song of The Year. Because, people who have been nominated 32 times and have taken home 10 gramophones over the years may just be over it at that point. Especially when you know everyone is
judging your facial reactions. It seems the higher-ups refused to divulge whether Swifty won so
reports say she just skipped out on
the festivities altogether. Song of the Year wound up going to Billie Eilish, who swept almost all six of the categories she was nominated in, losing only to Lizzo for Pop Solo Performance.“[Swift’s team] called and wanted to be assured that she would win the Grammy. And while it wasn’t an explicit demand, they certainly were fishing to find out if Taylor was a winner,” an unnamed source told
Page Six. “It was understood in the conversation that if she’s not winning, she’s not coming to the Grammys.”[video_embed id='1885615']RELATED: The red carpet looks we loved at the 62nd Grammys[/video_embed]“It’s widely known in the industry that [Swift’s team] called to find out if she was getting a Grammy, they wouldn’t tell her, so she didn’t go,” another unnamed source said. “It’s not uncommon [for an artist] to want to know. And everyone knows Taylor loves to win, win, win.”To be fair, does anyone like to
not win? Regardless, Swift’s camp is saying the reports are untrue, and that the singer just didn’t go. Her reps didn’t give a reason, but Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich kept a spot open for the “Love Story” singer just in case she changed her mind.“One of her representatives called and said, specifically, that she wanted to do the show for me. And then it was not confirmed,”
Ehrlich told Variety. “So these reports that she pulled out of the show… She was never booked. I had her in a rundown. There was a placeholder if it did confirm. But she was never confirmed. Obviously I would have loved to have had her. And I’m really not at liberty to go into why ultimately she did not confirm—as opposed to pulled out—but I understood her reasoning, let’s just say that.”
Meanwhile, Swift has other things to be concerned about right now. Like the just-released documentary
Miss Americana, which follows the singer over several years of her career as she transitioned from teenage sensation to mature singer, all while eager fans (and haters) followed every move.“It’s pretty wild to be sharing this much of my life because it’s pretty scary to be vulnerable! (understatement of the century),” Swift shared on Instagram. “But I’m also so grateful to the critics and journalists who have so thoughtfully watched and reflected on the film.”[video_embed id='1884128']RELATED: Taylor Swift opens up about her past eating disorder[/video_embed]
