The Weeknd and Roddy Ricch lead the nominations for the American Music Awards

The American Music Award nominations have been announced, and Canadian musician The Weeknd has tied for the most nominations with rapper Roddy Ricch. Both men earned eight nods this year and will face off in the show’s biggest category, Artist of the Year.Two-time AMA winner The Weeknd is also nominated for Favorite Male Artist, Favorite Male Soul/R&B Artist, Favorite Album Pop/Rock and Favorite Soul/R&B Album for After Hours, Favorite Song Soul/R&B for “Heartless” and Favorite Music Video and Favorite Song for “Blinding Light.”Newcomer Roddy Ricch is nominated for New Artist of the Year, Favorite Male Rap/Hip Hop Artist, Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album for Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, Favorite Pop/Rock Song for “The Box,” and Collaboration of the Year for his track “Rockstar” with DaBaby. Roddy Ricch earned two nominations for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop song for “Rockstar” and “The Box.” A win isn’t guaranteed for Roddy even with two nominations in the category considering the third song he’s up against is Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B’s monster collaboration “WAP.”[video_embed id='2041288']RELATED: Megan Thee Stallion, The Weeknd land on Time 100 list[/video_embed]Megan Thee Stallion earned a total of five nominations this year, the most behind The Weeknd and Roddy Ricch. The rapper will also face off against Roddy Ricch for New Artist of the Year, an impressive category that includes Lewis Capaldi, Doja Cat, and DaBaby.Megan Thee Stallion has two songs nominated for Best Collaboration, including “WAP” with Cardi B and “Savage Remix” with Beyoncé. Cardi and Megan are both nominated for Favorite Female Rap/Hip Hop Artist in a category that also includes Megan’s “Hot Girl Summer” collaborator Nicki Minaj.Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, Bad Bunny and DaBaby are up for four AMAs this year. Swift is the only woman nominated for Artist of the Year, a category she won last year, and is nominated with Gaga and Dua Lipa for Favorite Female Rock/Pop Artist. Swift’s surprise eighth studio album Folklore is the only nominated album by a woman in the Favorite Album Pop/Rock category, which includes The Weeknd’s After Hours and Harry Styles’ Fine Line.During the 2019 AMAs, Swift received the Artist of the Decade Award and broke Michael Jackson’s record of 24 wins to become the most awarded artist in the show’s history, bringing her total AMA trophies up to a staggering 28. If Swift wins Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist, she’ll beat record holders Olivia Newton-John and Whitney Houston, who have previously won the category four times.Fifteen-time AMA winner and Canadian artist Justin Bieber is up for Artist of the Year and Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist. If Bieber wins the latter, it will mark his fourth win, beating the records set by Eric Clapton, Michael Bolton, Michael Jackson and Barry Manilow. His country collaboration “10,000 Hours” with fellow Scooter Braun artists Dan + Shay earned two nominations this year, including Favorite Country Song and Collaboration of the Year.There were a few additional standouts included in Monday’s announcement. For the first time, Kanye West has been nominated for Favorite Inspirational Artist. Bad Bunny, who released two albums last year, is competing against himself for Favorite Latin Album. K-Pop superstars BTS, who took home three AMAs last year, were only nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Duo and Favorite Social Artist despite their numerous massive album and single releases in 2020.The 2020 American Music Awards will air Sunday, November 22 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
