Move over, Santa - there’s a new kid in town. Taylor Swift just dropped some holiday joy into our lives with the midnight release of “Christmas Tree Farm”, a new song and video that takes a nostalgic look back at the magic of winter in childhood. The clip is packed with adorable home videos of the star growing up on (you guessed it) an actual Christmas Tree Farm in rural Pennsylvania. What’s more festive than that? The track starts out in a dramatic, jazzy, big band fashion before transitioning into an upbeat holiday jam that’s more reminiscent of Mariah Carey than Bing Crosby. A snowsuit-clad baby Swift is seen riding a sled, playing in the snow and opening gifts with her family. We even see the pop superstar open what might be her very first guitar, blissfully unaware of where it would take her.
This isn’t Taylor’s first foray into holiday music. Swift previously released a six track Christmas album back in 2007.
Sounds of the Season (later packaged as
The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection) included covers of classic holiday jams like “Santa, Baby” and “Last Christmas” as well as several original songs. The cover art featured a young, curly-haired Swift staring into the camera while decked out in festive sparkles, her arms cradling a guitar. Released just after her debut album and before
Fearless, it’s a sweetly twangy, pre-popstar Swift throwback. In true cat lady fashion, Swift turned to pets Meredith, Olivia and Benjamin for advice on releasing her new song, which was apparently written only days ago. “Ok, I know this is pretty wild, but I’ve just written a Christmas song,” Swift said in an Instagram video posted yesterday. “I feel like it’s weird to just, wait a year to put it out...ugh, I don’t know what to do. So, I don’t have anyone to ask, except…” The clip then cuts to Swift asking each of her cats for advice. Naturally, they ignore her questioning, flopping down and grooming themselves as Swift continues to talk. “Just focus for one second,” Swift urges one of the animals. Spoiler alert: they don’t care. (They’re cats, after all.)
Time will tell if Christmas Tree Farm joins the ranks of All I Want for Christmas and other modern holiday classics. If you haven’t already, you can
