Taylor Swift is dropping another surprise new album ‘evermore’ at midnight

It looks as though there is in fact a lot going on at the moment in the world of Taylor Swift. The singer is continuing to embrace the "surprise drop" in 2020 and has just announced that she is releasing her ninth studio album at midnight. As in, tonight. Most surprises this year haven’t been good, but Taylor Swift is doing her part to flatten the news-curve.

On Thursday morning, Swift shared a series of Instagram posts announcing that evermore will be released on December 11. Describing the collection of songs as a sister album to folklore, which Swift surprised fans with back in July, the Grammy winner began her announcement by posting sections of a picture showing herself in a deep red wool coat with her hair in a French braid. Swift's back is to the camera as she gazes out at a treelined landscape consistent with the natural wooded aesthetic of folklore. We are already taking deep breaths ahead of the sob-cry-listening session to come tonight.

“I’m elated to tell you that my 9th studio album, and folklore’s sister record, will be out tonight at midnight eastern. It’s called evermore,” wrote Swift. “To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in.”

Swift says that evermore represents a major first in her career, which has been comprised of standalone albums that have represented their own unique era in her life and style as a songwriter. “There was something different with folklore. In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning,” continued Swift. “I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives. So I just kept writing them.”

Swift confirmed that like folklore, evermore would also include production and writing from Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, WB (we assume William Bowery aka Joe Alwyn), and Justin Vernon. The 15-track album will include features by Haim, Vernon’s musical alter ego Bon Iver and Vernon and Dessner’s band The National. Also in line with folklore (and most Swift offerings), evermore will have a deluxe edition that includes two additional songs. All digital album downloads will come with an exclusive digital booklet that contains 16 new photos. Give us all the dreamy woodland pics.

Swift was inspired by her lucky number 13 to release evermore ahead of her 31^st birthday on December 13. “Ever since I was 13, I’ve been excited about turning 31 because it’s my lucky number backwards, which is why I wanted to surprise you with this now,” wrote Swift, who just won the unofficial award for Best Bday Party Loot-Bag Ever. “You’ve all been so caring, supportive and thoughtful on my birthdays and so this time I thought I would give you something!”

Swift also said that releasing evermore is her way of helping to make a difficult 2020 and the upcoming holiday season a little bit easier for her fans. “I also know this holiday season will be a lonely one for most of us and if there are any of you out there who turn to music to cope with missing loved ones the way I do, this is for you.”

Still working from the folklore playbook, the release of evermore will coincide with the release of the album’s lead single and music video, which like “cardigan” will be directed by Swift. “willow” will drop at midnight following a YouTube Q&A between Swift and her fans.

The prolific pop star shared a still from the music video, which appears to show the singer in a wedding dress. Is this Swift playing one of the characters from the love triangle storyline she created in folklore or is she about to spring a surprise wedding announcement on us with boyfriend Joe Alwyn?
